Following Monroe's death in 1962, Warhol based a series of single image paintings on a still from the 1952 film Niagara. The vibrant paintings, one of which, Orange Marilyn was sold by Sotheby's, New York New York, state, United States

Between 1979 and 1986, Warhol returned to the theme of Marilyn, creating a group of paintings called the Reversal Series. Where the early single image paintings of Marilyn emphasize her uniqueness, the later paintings have multiple images of Marilyn and emphasize "her pervasiveness in the news media." Nine Multicolored Marilyns, estimated to bring $450/650,000, was executed in acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas and measures 54 3/4 by 41 3/4 in., (138.1 by 106.1 cm).
