of a two-week break that started after Sorenstam won the Nabisco Championship.

Sorenstam, a three-time major champion who won back-to-back U.S. Women's Opens in 1995 and '96, will join quality company if she wins at Wilshire. Hall of Famers Mickey Wright (twice) and Kathy Whitworth share the women's-tour record with four wins in consecutive scheduled events. Nancy Lopez, another Hall of Famer, had five consecutive wins in tournaments she entered.

The April 12-15 City of Hope LPGA Championship will be the first women's tour event at Wilshire, which has been the site of Senior PGA Tour events the past five years.

Sorenstam enters as the Tiger Woods of her tour, thanks to a three-week streak that produced consecutive victories in the Welch's Circle K Championship, Standard Register Ping and Nabisco Championship - a run that featured her second-round 59 in the Ping event.

She also will be facing a familiar challenger: Se Ri Pak Se Ri Pak (born September 28 1977 in Daejeon) is a South Korean professional golfer, playing on the LPGA Tour. She will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in November 2007. Career overview

, who battled Sorenstam to the wire in the Ping, when both challenged the old 72-hole LPGA record of 26 under par. Sorenstam finished 27 under and Pak 25 under.

--Scoring clinic: The Dave Pelz Scoring Game Tour, which concluded its first session of daily clinics two weeks ago at Lost Canyons Golf Club, will return to the Simi Valley facility in October for another 11 days of instruction in putting, chipping, pitching and wedge play.

Priced at less than the cost of the latest titanium driver, the $350 daily clinics also offer more opportunities to amortize the expense, as 60 to 65 percent of all strokes in a round are taken from inside 100 yards of the flagstick flag·stick

--Shadow opens: Lost Canyons, which opened its Sky course in November, opened its Shadow course last month, and Fred Couples was on hand to set the first course record at 72. Couples, who worked as a design consultant on both courses with Lost Canyons architect Pete Dye, is a past record-holder on the Sky course. His early 71 on that layout has been lowered to 67 by Charlie Wi, the former Westlake High star and 1990 state amateur champion.

--Matadors are bullish: Cal State Northridge freshman Beth Allen won her first collegiate tournament Tuesday to lead the Matadors to their first-ever team title on the road - a two-stroke victory in the 10-team Colby Classic at Rancho Canada GC in Carmel Valley.

Allen shot 72-73 for a 3-over-par 145 that won the individual competition by five strokes. Kelly Carlson (155), Alexis Arnold and Amanda Carmichael (both 161) also were top-10 finishers for CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge , which is in its second season of women's golf.

--Masterful start: The Master's College, in its second season of men's golf, has turned in three consecutive top-five tournament finishes, including team and individual titles at the Cal Lutheran Invitational.

Freshman Ryan Higton has been a tournament medalist twice for the Mustangs and junior John Anderson once. Joe Chally, a sophomore, placed eighth in leading the Mustangs to a fifth-place finish in the Monterey Bay Invitational at Fort Ord.

--Names in the game: Greg Puga, the former Los Angeles Roosevelt High all-around athlete who won last year's U.S. Mid-Amateur championship, will play in next week's Masters as a result of winning that USGA USGA United States Golf Association

offers one of the best views in the state. Now it also offers one of the better rates, provided you are in shape for a marathon day of golf. At $125, the greens fee isn't cheap by the round. But that fee - available Monday through Thursday - covers all the golf you can play in a day on the Pete Dye-designed layout that overlooks the Pacific Ocean from the Palos Verdes peninsula.

The course plays just 15 holes because of reconstruction that has taken out the ninth and 12th holes as equipment-staging areas for repair work on the 18th, which was lost to a landslide. The facility is expected to return to 18-hole play this summer.
