SOPRANO TO PERFORM AT CALARTS.Byline: Daily News VALENCIA - Lucy Shelton, one of the world's leading sopranos and a foremost interpreter of contemporary music, will perform in a special afternoon concert at CalArts. Shelton will sing three challenging contemporary works: Milton Babbitt's ``Philomel phil·o·mel n. A nightingale. [Alteration (influenced by French philomèle) of Middle English phylomene, from Medieval Latin philom ,'' the celebrated composer's 1964 tour de force for soprano and tape; New York-based composer Joshua Cody's ``Sicilian Song'' for soprano and violin; and Earl Kim's ``Earthlight earth·light n. See earthshine. ,'' a 1973 work for high soprano, violin with five mutes, piano and lights. She will be joined by two California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts known as CalArts U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S. School of Music faculty members, violinist Mark Menzies and pianist Peter Miyamoto, and additional guest artists at the Nov. 16 event. The program will also include performances of Brian Ferneyhough's ``Unsichtbare Farben,'' a piece for solo violin, and works by New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. composers James Gardner and Glenda Keam. Shelton is in Los Angeles to rehearse with a CalArts string quartet for the American premiere of Ferneyhough's Fourth String Quartet. The group will travel to New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of in December to perform at Carnegie Hall. Shelton has performed repertoire from Bach to Boulez at major chamber and orchestral venues throughout the world. The sought-after soprano has presented numerous world premieres, performing works by the likes of Elliot Carter, Oliver Knussen, Stephen Albert, Alexander Goehr, Sally Beamish and James Yannato. She is the only artist to have received the Walter W. Naumburg Award twice, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. The free concert, titled ``Two Times Two, Plus or Minus,'' will begin at 2 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Roy O. Disney Roy Oliver Disney (June 24, 1893–December 20, 1971, aged 78) was, with his younger brother Walt Disney, co-founder of what is now The Walt Disney Company.
