All he ever asked of himself was that he be ready when called upon.

That moment arrived Friday, and Leveque seized it.

Leveque was the key figure Friday, although there was no shortage of Crespi heroes. Brian Felten ignored fatigue to close the door on Royal (18-9) with 2-2/3 innings of relief. Junior outfielder Andy Campanella hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give Leveque some much-needed confidence before taking the mound.

But the win never would have happened had Leveque not stepped up.

``He pitched a tremendous game,'' Crespi coach Scott Muckey said. ``He gave us exactly what we needed.''

The Celts have had problems finding a reliable second starter to complement Felten all year. Leveque had the job at the beginning of the year, but control difficulties sabotaged his efforts. He was finally yanked from the rotation last month. Muckey had no choice but to turn to Leveque Friday. It helped that Leveque pitched against the Highlanders in his first varsity start last March.

``I had a lot of confidence coming in because I had beaten them before,'' said Leveque, who worked hard on his mechanics during his month of inactivity. ``I've had problems with my control, but today I hit my spots and got some big outs.''

by Campanella's three-run home run, held Royal to five hits and a run through 5-1/3 innings. After walking Matt Rainer in the sixth, he was lifted for Felten.

``He did his job, that's for sure,'' an impressed Felten said. ``That was a big performance from a sophomore.''

Felten gave up two runs in the sixth inning on Mike Rainer's two-run single. Otherwise, he had five strikeouts and gave up three hits. He struck out the side in the seventh, the final out coming with runners at first and third.

``That was all guts right there,'' Muckey said. ``Not much arm, but a lot of guts.''

Felten scoffed at the notion that he was tired after pitching so much the past week.

``The arm always feels good on game day,'' Felten said. ``When I'm needed, I'm there.''
