The new models, PCV-R545DS, PCV-R547DS and PCV-R549DS are equipped with added multimedia capabilities, new hardware extras and Intel(R) Pentium III processors at estimated prices ranging from $1,499 to $2,599.
Quality, performance, and functionality are key attributes for the VAIO Digital Studio line. When partnered with digital imaging solutions such as Sony Cyber-shot(R) digital cameras, DV Handycam(R) and Digital8(TM) camcorders or a digital audio accessory like the recently announced VAIO Music Clip(TM) Personal Network Player, consumers will have a powerful companion for exploring this age of digital audio and video.
For example, consumers can easily edit their own home movies or email video clips to friends across the country, all via their VAIO(R) PC. In addition, the entire family of VAIO Digital Studio computers comes bundled with dual drives and an Adaptec(R) Easy CD Creator(TM) software package so that users can seamlessly build an entire library of music.
"By bringing the worlds of audio-video and computing together, we are designing products that transform the consumer into a movie director one minute and music disc jockey the next," said Rich Black, senior marketing manager of desktop PCs for the Personal Network Solutions Company of Sony Electronics.
The latest additions to Sony's popular VAIO Digital Studio desktop PC family include the entry-level PCV-R545DS with a 500EMHz(2) Intel Pentium III processor and a 20GB(3) hard drive, the mid-range PCV-R547DS with a 600EMHz(2) Intel Pentium III processor and 27GB(3) hard drive, and the high-end power horse, the PCV-R549DS, featuring a 750MHz(2) Intel Pentium III processor and a 40GB(3) hard drive, all available with 128MB of memory.
The two higher end models will also ship with a new nVidia-TNT 2 Pro graphics card that has twice the rendering capabilities and 3D graphics than its predecessor as well as a new CD-RW drive, the Sony CRX-140E (8X/4X/32X) for even more functionality in the system.
The bundled multimedia software package includes updated versions of Sony's exclusive software DVgate(TM)Motion, PictureGear(TM), Smart Capture and Smart Connect. Adobe Premiere(R) LE is also in the PCV-R547 and the PCV-R549 VAIO Digital Studio PCs. With enhanced speed, power and memory, the new Sony VAIO Digital Studio computers make it easier than ever for an enthusiast or an amateur videographer to create a digital masterpiece.
Not exclusive to the professional studio or personal desktop editing suite, consumers may easily import and edit clips from a Sony Digital Handycam(R) camcorder via the high-speed (IEEE 1394) i.LINK(R) digital interface. Titles and scene transitions may be added seamlessly before outputting the footage, to digital tape or the integrated CD-RW drive, to create personal movies or to send video emails.
"More and more consumers are demanding a PC with digital video editing capabilities that enable them to easily create and edit home movies filled with meaningful moments in their lives," said Black. "These new VAIO PCs have all the hardware and software extras to turn your home movies or still photographs into works of art that will last a lifetime."
DIGITAL VIDEO EDITING: Use the i.LINK interface to transfer full-motion digital video to your VAIO Digital Studio Computer from a Sony Digital Handycam or Digital 8 camcorder. Then you can edit your video using Sony's exclusive DVgate(TM) Motion "simple cut" editing software and write the edited video back to the camcorder. It also allows you to store video as MPEG1 or MPEG2 (on the R547 and the R549 only) and write it to a CD-R or CD-RW. Then add transitions, titles and audio tracks with Adobe Premiere LE to create high quality home movies.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY: A new version of PictureGear is the ideal software solution to help organize, manage and manipulate digital contents. It now has audio file support, an easy-to-use interface, and enhanced panoramic picture making functions that allows you to stitch a panoramic picture from a movie as well as simple website tools for creating your own home page. This software turns your camera into virtual multi-mega pixel camera.
VIDEO EMAIL: Sony's unique Smart Capture software enables users to easily capture up to 60 seconds of compressed/uncompressed motion video in .AVI or MPEG format and quickly create a video email. One click of a button attaches the video file to an email application for easy distribution to friends and family. The compression format is flexible enough that anyone can enjoy the video.
SIMPLE PC NETWORKING: Sony's Smart Connect software, included in all three models as well as all new VAIO notebooks enhances the use of the systems' i.LINK (IEEE-1394) ports. This software permits Sony VAIO PCs to seamlessly connect allowing for simple PC networking. For instance, by connecting a desktop and notebook PC through the i.LINK interface, a user can share files, Internet connections, drives, printers and even back up files from one system to the other. You can also connect two or more VAIO PCs and play multi-player network games. This is all possible without complicated cables and device protocols via the i.LINK connection.
For those consumers seeking a larger hard drive or additional memory, Sony makes selecting a customized configuration easy by offering the company's configure-to-order service through Sony VAIO Direct(SM) (www.sony.com/direct). Consumers can now conveniently upgrade the hard drive and/or memory specifications. Pricing is based on the configuration selected.
