SONY IMAGESOFT SETS THE VIDEO GAME PACE; INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT LEADER MAXIMIZES GAME PLAY EXPERIENCE WITH CD TECHNOLOGY

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Already well on the way to offering the definitive interactive game play experience with its current range of titles, Sony Imagesoft enters 1994 armed with a significant amount of additional titles, including numerous CD-based games.
According to Olaf Olafsson, president, Sony Imagesoft, today's discriminating game player demands more from the companies which produce video games. "Players are constantly asking for more, including more realistic screen images; more depth to plot dimension; and more ability to control game action," he explained. "We respond by ensuring our titles deliver maximum entertainment value, whether it's a multimillion dollar epic shot only for video game play as in `Ground Zero Texas'; the realistic action offered by digitizing real athletes as in `ESPN Baseball Tonight'; or the challenge of a television game show brought to life in the living room, with the sets, the music and the stars of such shows as `Jeopardy!' or `Wheel of Fortune,'" he said.
Much of what Sony Imagesoft has been able to do with interactive entertainment can be attributed to the company's use of CD-ROM, a burgeoning technology, which, when properly harnessed, can dramatically change the video game experience. According to Sony Imagesoft Executive Producer Rich Robinson, CD technology lets players enhance their experience by making the games more realistic through the addition of digitized footage. "When you can interact with real people or film clips, not simply cartoon characters, the game play takes on new proportions," said Robinson. "Players can now make a series of choices utilizing real actors which determine the plot of a game. In fact, when playing `Ground Zero Texas,' players may never encounter the same storyline twice." However, according to Olafsson, merely adding CD technology to the game developer's palette is not enough to keep players satisfied. Specific properties of the game itself -- themeline, action, and level of challenge -- are critical aspects of the video game entertainment experience. "While we are excited to transition to CD technology, it is still creative people with creative ideas and inventive expression that make great games."
