``It was really a matter of finding the right adjustments to make in the hot conditions,'' said Busch, who won his fifth pole of the season in 25 starts. ``I think the balance turned out to be a really good pole-sitting car.

``We tried a little something different this time, and we're good on Friday. We just need to get a little better on Sunday.''

Vickers was the 2003 Busch Series champion, and at age 20, the youngest champion in any of NASCAR's three top-tier series. He currently drives the #83 Red Bull Toyota Camry for Team Red Bull.  was second to Busch with a run of 184.049 for his third front-row start at Fontana, while rookie Clint Bowyer ended third at 183.505. Scott Riggs and Martin Truex Jr., in his career-best effort, rounded out the top five.

By winning his second pole of the year at Fontana, Busch stole the spotlight from the 11drivers who are competing for spots in NASCAR's Chase playoff format. Busch, who sits in 14th in the points race, was eliminated last week at Bristol.

Eight of those in the top 10 qualified in the first eight rows for Sunday's race, set to start at 5 p.m. Tony Stewart had the 22nd-best speed and Mark Martin, 10th in the points, will start 38th in the 43-card field.

Kasey Kahne, who trails Martin by 90 points in 11th place, will start ninth.

Martin's effort was emblamatic of Ford drivers. Ford did not post a top-10 start for the fourth time this season, all coming in the past six races.

Among the top 10, the best effort was turned in by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Just a year ago, Earnhardt was officially eliminated from the Chase at this race but nailed down the sixth starting spot with a run of 182.792, his best start at Fontana.

Jeff Burton (seventh in points) will start seventh, followed rookie Denny Hamlin (sixth). Defending race winner Kyle Busch (fourth) is in the 10th starting spot, followed by Matt Kenseth (second).

Jeff Gordon (fifth) is on the outside of the seventh row with Kevin Harvick (3rd) in 15th and points leader Jimmie Johnson in 16th.

Tony Stewart, eighth in the points, is in the 11th row. Busch made the Chase a year ago, but missed the last two races after being suspended by Roush. He joined Roger Penske's team this year and admitted it was a learning process.
