* The Good

Sony had an edge with the original tape-playing Walkman: no one else made anything like it. With the newest CD version, and surrounded by competitors, they have bet heavily on style. Rather than a lid, the CDs slide in like in a dash-mounted car changer. The watch-face control device is arresting, as is the ever-clean-and-classy silver finish. The rest is to be expected: skip control, programmable track order and, happily, rechargeable batteries. Very good-but not necessarily bleeding-edge-sound quality.

* The Bad

Egads, the price!

* Who Should Buy

If you drive a Porsche Boxster or carry a Louis Vuitton purse, this is the only CD player you would even consider buying.

* Who Should Not

Mere mortals. But never fear, you can get a basic clamshell CD Walkman from Sony for as low as $90.
