SONY, PANAVISION TEAM IN DIGITAL CAMERA VENTURE.

WOODLAND HILLS - Panavision Inc. and Sony Electronics Sony Electronics Inc., headquartered in San Diego, Calif., is the largest component of Sony Corporation of America, the U.S. holding company for Sony's U.S.-based electronics and entertainment businesses.  Inc. announced Monday that they will launch a new company to jointly develop and rent digital camera systems for feature film and other high-end cinematography cinematography: see motion picture photography.

 is shooting the next installment in the ``Star Wars'' sci-fi series, using six Sony 24P CineAlta cameras coupled with Panavision's Primo Digital lenses.

Lucas has endorsed this emerging technology by deciding to shoot his next two ``Star Wars'' films with cameras that record scenes electronically, without film.

 technology, the new venture, as yet unnamed, marks a concerted attempt to become the leader in the field, company officials said.

``They both see it as an opportunity to really capture a market,'' said James Ankner, a Panavision spokesman.

As part of the deal, Sony purchased 714,300 shares, or about 8 percent, of Panavision common stock for an aggregate consideration of $10 million and a warrant to acquire an additional 714,300 shares at an exercise price of $17.50 per share subject to adjustment.

The Sony cameras and Panavision lenses can still be purchased separately from their respective manufacturers. But the combined digital cinema system will be available for rental exclusively through the new company.

Details were not released about the new venture, although it is possible it will be run out of Panavision's offices in Woodland Hills when the shop opens in coming weeks, a Sony spokesman said.

Shares of Panavision increased 31.25 cents to $9.25 Monday.
