SOMMERS, SCHWARTZ, SILVER & SCHWARTZ IS A MAJOR SPONSOR
 OF VOLUNTEER-A-THON
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Southfield law firm of Sommers, Schwartz, Silver & Schwartz is a major sponsor of a Volunteer- A-Thon, being held Saturday, May 16, benefiting dozens of Detroit-area charitable and social service organizations.
The Volunteer-A-Thon is being held by Volunteer Impact, a non-profit organization founded in 1989 by a core group of local attorneys, stockbrokers, grassroots activists and everyday working people.
At Saturday's Volunteer-A-Thon, volunteers will gather at Orchestra Hall at 7:30 a.m. where Free Press columnist Mitch Albom will kick off the event. From there the volunteers will fan out and spend the day working on a variety of jobs such as providing maintenance and repair of senior citizens' homes, preparing and serving meals to the needy, visiting nursing homes, and doing yard work, planting and general cleanup at the homes of disadvantaged elderly.
Participants in the Volunteer-A-Thon are also soliciting pledges from the public to sponsor their day of hard work. The money raised from the event will go toward providing supplies and materials for future Volunteer Impact community projects.
Some of the organizations benefiting from the Volunteer-A-Thon include: The Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS); Gleaners Food Bank; Habitat for Humanity; Focus: Hope; project SAVE (Seek ad Visit the Elderly); and the Ronald McDonald House.
Attorneys David Kotzian and Lisa Pernick, shareholders with Sommers, Schwartz, Silver & Schwartz, were among the founding members of Volunteer Impact and serve on the board of directors and as volunteers with the organization's monthly community projects. Their law firm provided a sizable donation to assist in purchasing supplies and equipment needed for the Volunteer-A-Thon.
Volunteer Impact's members range from 10 to 60 years of age and live throughout Metropolitan Detroit, bringing together city dwellers and suburbanites in their efforts.
"We formed Volunteer Impact to give people the opportunity to see their efforts make a difference," said Pernick. "The Volunteer-A-Thon will allow people from all walks of life to work toward the common goal of simply providing help where it's desperately needed," she added.
