SOMETHING'S FISHY SIERRA OFFICIALS EXPECT GREAT SEASON.

Byline: Keith Lair Staff Writer

Lake ice is nearly gone and the mid-day temperatures are hitting 70 degrees in the Eastern Sierra. With 24 days to go, anglers finally can begin making those last-minute preparations for the April 28 trout opener.

 supervisor Mike Haynie said.

Haynie said he is not toeing the DFG's party line. He has backing from many Eastern Sierra veterans. Crowley Lake Crowley Lake is a reservoir on the upper Owens River in southern Mono County, California in the United States. It was created in 1941 by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP) as storage for the Los Angeles Aqueduct and for flood control.  Fish Camp concessionaire Jeff Topp and Jim Reed of Ken's Sporting Goods Noun 1. sporting goods - sports equipment sold as a commodity

Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  anglers are going to have another splendid season.

Reed said he fished Pleasant Valley Reservoir this past weekend and saw numerous limits of trout.

Haynie said the department's planting program has made the Eastern Sierra a success. The DFG DFG Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Council)

``The weather was unusual in that we had very little precipitation until late January and February, but I don't think that will really affect things,'' Haynie said.

The season traditionally opens with a fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.

Explosives or combustibles used for display. Of ancient Chinese origin, fireworks evidently developed out of military rockets and explosive missiles and accompanied the spread of military explosives westward to
show at 4:45 a.m. over Crowley on the final Saturday of April. More than 10,000 anglers are expected at the lake and camping can begin two days before the opener.

Topp said Crowley became completely ice-free last week and the water temperature is about 45 degrees. He says he has not seen any fish jumping, which would indicate they are feeding.

``The (DFG) program has definitely helped,'' Topp said. ``It's a boon to Southern California anglers, and I think they're beginning to expect to have great fishing every time, now.''

Reed said Bridgeport Reservoir and Twin Lakes are ice-free, except for patches in the shaded areas, but Virginia Lakes probably won't thaw until May.

There is one concern though: A Dec. 30 tanker-truck accident that spilled oil into the East Walker River.

``There were a couple of good things about the spill,'' Reed said. ``It was heating oil that had to be heated to 180 degrees to get into the tanker, so that when it spilled, it coagulated co·ag·u·late

and did not spread. And, the (river's) flow was low.''

Fewer than 50 dead trout were found, but oil booms remain along the river.

Another concern for anglers is the DFG's decision to stop stocking some high Sierra lakes because of a concern for imperiled native frogs. But Haynie said it should not be a concern because in many of those lakes, the stocked fish are reproducing.

``Fishing will actually be better,'' he said. ``In some instances, we were overstocking and making the conditions worse because there were too many fish and that kills the lake. This way, we're supporting the fishery and native habitat. I expect anglers to be concerned, but I think that in the long run, the fishing will be better.''

Haynie said that during the season, the DFG will stock 531,000 pounds of trout in Mono County waters and 248,200 pounds of trout in Inyo County waters, about the same amount as last year. The fish will come from the Hot Creek, Fish Springs and Black Rock hatcheries.
