Anyone who wants to participate in Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA[3]) is an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information-technology services, founded on 24 February 1982.  Inc's new process for developing extensions to the Java platform Running Java programs under the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Java "platform" refers to the running of Java programs versus Java itself, which is a programming language. Java programs are machine independent and run intact on any hardware platform that has a Java interpreter (JVM).  and API must sign an agreement granting Sun rights to IP - or agree to license the patented work on fair terms for use in implementing extensions - plus $5,000 a year ($2,000 to non-profit organizations). IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Corp-led real-time team within the EmbeddedJava group is defining a starting point for a Real-time Extension Specification. It will use the same set of NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology, Washington, DC, www.nist.gov) The standards-defining agency of the U.S. government, formerly the National Bureau of Standards. It is one of three agencies that fall under the Technology Administration (www.technology.  requirements being used by Hewlett-Packard Co et al in their alternative Real-Time Java Working Group. The Boundary-Scan API extension Java expert group will work on enabling JavaCard to be useable on all available JVMs. It is not expected that the Java API for Boundary-Scan would ever run on a smart card, but it could be hosted on an 8-bit or simpler microprocessor just like those used on smart cards, the Xilinx Corp-led group says.
