SOME HISTORY IS STILL STANDING IMPORTANT BUILDINGS TO BE FOUND ALL OVER.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

An ornate domed structure once used as a marker for airplane pilots and a mansion-turned-library inspired by an 1893 world expo pavilion are among dozens of historic structures dotting Burbank and Glendale.

Burbank has three buildings on the National Register of Historic Places This article is about the U.S. Register. For the National Register of Historic Places in Canada see Canadian Register of Historic Places.

It was formerly known as United Airport (1930-1934); Union Air Terminal (1934-1940);
.

Eleven aviation pioneers are buried beneath the dome, which was once nicked by an airplane when early pilots used it as a guide at what was then called Union Airport.

Glendale has 54 buildings that the city itself designated as historic, and seven of those are on the national register.

The 1904 Brand Art & Music Center, at 1601 W. Mountain St., is on the city's register but not the national one. But it is one of Glendale's most photographed buildings.

``It's a very grand and beautiful structure inside and out, with beautiful woodwork woodwork: see carpentry; furniture; intarsia; marquetry; veneer; wood carving.  and beautiful archways and a lovely view of looking down upon the city from a hill,'' said Arlene Vidor, president of the Glendale Historical Society.

The structure was built as a mansion by Glendale founding father Leslie C. Brand, who was inspired by the East Indian East In·dies

Brand willed the mansion, which he called El Miradero, to the city.

Glendale homeowners can ask to have their homes designated as historic properties. Last week, the Glendale City Council voted 5-0 to add two English Tudor-revival homes to the city's register of historic places.

The most recently designated historic homes are a 1923 building at 1560 Grandview Ave. and a 1927 building at 1114 Rossmoyne Ave. The Grandview house is in the Cumberland Heights neighborhood, which could eventually be designated as a historic district.

Glendale officials get at least one application a month from homeowners to have their homes designated as historic, said Juliet Arroyo, Glendale planner for historic preservation Historic preservation is the act of maintaining and repairing existing historic materials and the retention of a property's form as it has evolved over time. When considering the United States Department of Interior's interpretation: "Preservation calls for the existing form, . The pace of applications has increased recently.

Burbank in 1999 created a process for designating properties, including homes, as historically significant, said Michael Forbes Michael Patrick Forbes (b. July 16 1952, Riverhead, New York) is a politician from the state of New York.

Forbes graduated from the SUNY Albany. Forbes worked as an assistant for Sen. Al D'Amato and U.S. Rep. Connie Mack.
, senior planner. But the designation has never been used, and since Burbank adopted its historical preservation ordinance, some of the homes designated as potentially historic have been demolished, he said.

As a result, the Burbank Heritage Commission could retool re·tool

``The political climate in Burbank has been somewhat less conducive to vigorous historic preservation efforts as opposed to Glendale,'' said Ken Bernstein, director of preservation for the Los Angeles Conservancy The Los Angeles Conservancy is the preeminent historic preservation organization in Los Angeles, California. It works to document, rescue and revitalize historic buildings, places and neighborhoods in the city. .

``Both cities have a collection of great public buildings. And certainly Burbank City Hall is among the most striking and significant public buildings in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County.''

Built in 1943, Burbank City Hall, a Federal Works Agency project, features brasswork in the lobby and a mural in the City Council chambers depicting President Franklin D. Roosevelt's ``Four Freedoms.''

``Stood the test of time,'' said Mary Jane Strickland, founder of the Burbank Historical Society.

Another building that stood the test of time is the 1928 Masonic Temple at 234 S. Brand Blvd. in Glendale. The building is on Glendale's list of historic structures, and it has gone from hosting Masonic meetings to housing the repertory theater company A Noise Within.
