The election of the freshman legislators is partially a result of term limits, which opened up seats and prompted some veteran lawmakers to switch between the Senate and Assembly.

And in the 38th Assembly District race, Republican Cameron Smyth of Santa Clarita was leading Democrat Lyn Shaw of Burbank and Libertarian Peggy L. Christensen, of Granada Hills.

Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys, the only returning Valley incumbent in the Assembly, was ahead of Republican Rick Montaine for the 40th District seat.

In the race in the 41st Assembly District, Democrat Julia Brownley, who heads the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is the school district for the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu, California. It has ten elementary schools, two middle schools, three high schools, an adult high school, and an alternative school.  board, held an early lead over Republican Tony Dolz and Libertarian Conrad Stefan Frankowski.

Burbank school board member Paul Krekorian, a Democrat, was leading Republican Michael M. Agbaba and Libertarian Steve Myers in the 43rd Assembly District race.

In a California Senate race, Los Angeles City Councilman Alex Padilla, a Democrat from Mission Hills, was ahead of Libertarian candidate Pamela J. Brown, an economics professor, to represent the 20th District.

In the 22nd Senate District, incumbent Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, had a large lead over Republican Mike Ten and Libertarian Murray Levy.
