SOME BACKGROUND ON THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY -- SITE OF THE LOS ANGELES EARTHQUAKE

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The following has been issued by Tom Jardine, vice president of public relations/public affairs of Carlson Companies:
As you know, Carlson Companies has many businesses in the Los Angeles area, including the San Fernando Valley area (Northridge and other nearby communities). They include Radisson Hotels and TGI Friday's and Carlson Travel Network offices. Both our hospitality and travel departments are trying to keep you posted on our businesses in this earthquake-stricken area.
By the way, as a former resident of the San Fernando Valley (North Hollywood) and Los Angeles and a former assistant to the Mayor of Los Angeles, you might like to know that Northridge, reported epicenter of the quake, is part of or a section of the City of Los Angeles (population). It is not a suburb nor is it 20 miles from Los Angeles. It is, however, approximately 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
The San Fernando Valley is about 20 miles wide (east/west) and about 10 miles (north and south) and has about 1.5 million people or about half of Los Angeles' three million plus people. All communities, mentioned in the news reports so far, including Northridge, Granada Hills, Sylmar and Resada, are part of the City of Los Angeles. The only San Fernando Valley areas not part of Los Angeles are the Valley cities of Burbank and the City of San Fernando. They are separate cities. Northridge is to Los Angeles what Kenwood would be to Minneapolis.
The Valley is honeycombed with outdoor pools, both private homes and apartments. The Valley probably has the greatest concentration of outdoor pools of any place in the world. It is home to many celebrities and entertainment people. Bing Crosby made the song "I Want To Make The San Fernando Valley My Home" a popular tune over 50 years ago and possibly helped start an unprecedented influx of people to that area beginning in the Fifties.
In my opinion, one of the biggest problems facing Los Angeles and the State of California, is to repair and restore the severed freeways which provide an arterial lifeline for traffic from the center and other parts of the basin of Los Angeles to northern and southern California using the inland route.
The other reported damaged freeway, which reportedly carries the heaviest traffic load, the Santa Monica Freeway (Interstate 10), provides transportation west from the downtown Los Angeles area to the ocean. This same Interstate 10 carries traffic east to Nevada and Arizona but is known as the San Bernardino Freeway. These freeway repair efforts may take months and will require rerouting of traffic onto surface streets and to other freeways, potentially causing real traffic problems.
I was a resident of Pacific Palisades, another section of Los Angeles, in 1971 when an earthquake struck the San Fernando Valley completely flattening the Veteran's Hospital there. Fortunately, that quake, like the one at Northridge, occurred very early in the morning -- before the freeways got loaded with people -- and damage and loss of life was much less then because the epicenter came from an area behind the mountains bordering the San Fernando Valley. This time that epicenter appears to be right under Northridge.
Your coverage has been excellent. Give me a call if you need any additional information about this famous part of Los Angeles.
