SOME ABSENTEE BALLOTS REPLACED.

Byline: Rick Orlov Staff Writer

In another embarrassment for the City Clerk's Office, officials on Wednesday confirmed they were forced to mail out 1,100 new absentee One who has left, either temporarily or permanently, his or her domicile or usual place of residence or business. The pamphlet gained popularity as an instrument of religious or political controversy, giving the author and reader full benefit of freedom of the press. .

``As soon as we heard about the problem, we checked the ballots and found that this batch didn't get the full ballot pamphlet,'' election supervisor Kris Heffron said.

``We heard about it last Friday afternoon and, by Saturday, had new corrected pamphlets and an information sheet in the mail to be received by voters last Monday. We didn't get any absentee ballots in until Tuesday, so we hope we caught all the mistakes.''

However, one of the candidates affected, Nancy Pearlman, said she questions whether that assurance is enough.

``This is simply awful,'' Pearlman said. ``I know how important absentee ballots are. I lost an election by 249 votes (in 1997) because of absentee ballots.''

Pearlman said she is concerned that a corrected ballot went to one of her neighbors whose original ballot had no problems.

``I'm just not sure if I can trust the city,'' Pearlman said.

The problem came with the printing of the same page twice in a batch of the pamphlets, and new ballots were sent to all who could have been affected, Heffron said.

The ballot page was for the race for Office No. 6 of the Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. Two years ago, 1.4 million supplemental ballot pamphlets had to be mailed out because the pamphlet failed to include details of a city bond proposal.
