SOMALIA - Aug. 6 - Fighting In Kismayo.


At least 18 people are killed and dozens are wounded as more than 600 militiamen from the Ethiopian-backed Somali Reconciliation and Reconstruction Council, led by Mohammed Siad Hersi, known as Gen. Morgan, take control of Kismayo, the third-largest city and an important port on the Horn of Africa Horn of Africa, peninsula, NE Africa, opposite the S Arabia Peninsula. Also known as the Somali Peninsula, it encompasses Somalia and E Ethiopia and is the easternmost extension of the continent, separating the Gulf of Aden from the Indian Ocean.  about 500 km south of Mogadishu, defeating the pro-government Middle Juba Valley Alliance The Juba Valley Alliance (JVA) (Somali: Isbahaysiga Dooxada Jubba) is a political faction of the Somali Civil War. It was the primary opponent of the Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM) and the Somali Reconciliation and Restoration Council (SRRC) vying for the control of  forces. (The council is a coalition of faction leaders opposed to the new transitional government in Mogadishu. The alliance supports the government, which controls little territory outside the capital. Somalia has been without a central government since the removal of Pres. Siad Barre Mohamed Siad Barre (Somali: Maxamed Siyaad Barre) (1919 – January 2, 1995) was the Head of State of Somalia from 1969 to 1991. Prior to his presidency he was an army commander under the democratic government of Somalia which had been in place since independence in June  in 1991, when rival faction leaders turned against each other, dividing the country into clan-based fiefdoms. A group of businessmen and clan elders formed the transitional government in 2000, but the leaders of the most powerful factions have opposed it). On Aug. 7, Col.
