SOLEC INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES 20 PERCENT EFFICIENT SOLAR CELL

HAWTHORNE, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Solec International Inc. is the first solar cell manufacturer to reach 20 percent efficiency for low-cost terrestrial grade photovoltaics. The recently approved patent is expected to issue this fall. Solec, currently the third largest U.S. photovoltaic manufacturer, has been competing in a market that traditionally ships product in the 5 percent to 13 percent range.
Ishaq Shahryar, president and founder of Solec International Inc., was the first to develop the manufacturing technology for low cost solar cells in 1973. He formed Solec in 1976 to concentrate on terrestrial markets for photovoltaic power. Now, with his latest breakthrough invention increasing solar cell efficiency to 20 percent, Shahryar is poised to take Solec into an ever-widening marketplace.
Solec currently has two additional patents pending; one for a "fast pull" technique that is expected to reduce the growing time of silicon ingots by 60 percent. The other is for growing poly-crystalline ingots in the traditional single-crystal (CZ) process. When developed and commercialized, the combination of three new Solec technologies are expected to bring manufacturing costs below $2.00 per watt.
Solec's manufacturing activity includes silicon crystal growing, silicon wafer fabrication and the manufacture of solar cells and modules. Considered a leading edge in the industry, Solec's traditional technology is licensed to companies in France, Italy and Japan. Earlier this year Solec licensed a prominent group in India for joint-venture manufacturing.
Solec will hold 25 percent interest in the joint venture, Pentafour Solec Technology Ltd., which will commence module assembly in India by January 1994. Actual solar cell manufacturing is expected beginning in the fourth quarter of 1994.
"Having successfully negotiated the quantum leap to 20 percent efficiency, Solec is positioning itself to challenge the photovoltaic industry leader," says Shahryar. "We've done very well for ourselves prior these breakthroughs, especially in the highly visible call box category. When fully developed our new manufacturing process will allow us to significantly boost sales to the utility grid-extension markets and for developing countries' rural electrification as well as new, relatively untapped markets, including the potentially multibillion dollar street and park lighting markets."
