SOLDIER ON LEAVE THRILLED TO SEE SON.

Byline: Susan Abram Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Army Cpl. Adam Hobbs has watched his son grow via digital photographs his mother sends. He lines the walls around his bunk with them, seeing how his boy has learned to crawl and squirm with restlessness, and how is hair has become blonder.

But on Friday, after serving eight months on Iraq's northeast border, Hobbs saw his son for real and marveled at all the changes in 16-month-old William that a camera lens didn't pick up.

``He's huge!'' Hobbs said softly in wonderment, after kissing William on the cheek. ``Look at his lashes. Jeez jeez

, he's got teeth!''

Hobbs, 23, has been stationed in Baquabah, Iraq, as part of the 4th Military Police Company of the Fourth Infantry Division.

A few days ago, he was told he had two weeks' leave, he said.

``I just said, OK!'' he said as he sat in his family's home in Valencia, where the front of the house was decorated with balloons and banners welcoming him home. ``Most people just want to come home. We live in the not-so-great area. I wash my clothes in a bucket. Up near Tikrit, those guys have washing machines (storage) washing machine - An old-style 14-inch hard disk in a floor-standing cabinet. So called because of the size of the cabinet and the "top-loading" access to the media packs - and, of course, they were always set on "spin cycle". .''

, said he hasn't seen William since February, just before the boy had learned to crawl.

Hobbs' mother, Lonette Hobbs-Sellers, said she was happy to have both her son and his son home, and reunited "Reunited" was a #1 hit in the United States in 1979 by the Washington, D.C.-based group Peaches & Herb.

. She bought all of Adam Hobbs' favorite foods, she said. The first thing she did when Adam came home was show him the inside of the refrigerator.

``We're going to celebrate Thanksgiving and Adam's birthday early this year,'' Hobbs-Sellers said.

Hobbs also had the chance to meet his new, 9-month-old niece, Ilonna, on Friday, and held her as his mother held his son and the family became reacquainted.

``He doesn't know me yet,'' Hobbs said, as he stroked William's hair, never taking his eyes off his son.
