Times are tense at the Thompson home these days. His father, David, is glued to the TV most nights, watching for war updates on news stations. But it can be overwhelming.

``It's really hard,'' said his father, David. ``I support everything the president is doing. We have to do what we have to do. But I am a father. And my son could be in trouble, and I couldn't do anything about it.''

Cory's wife, Heather, is coping. She meets with other spouses on base and attends support group meetings.

But she misses him.

``I love him so much,'' she said. ``I miss him like crazy. I hope he's staying safe and strong, but the main thing - safe.''

She's written a letter every day since the war began. He's written a couple of times.
