The closure of the park at 22360 Devonshire St. affects numerous residents who make use of its recreation center, preschool, playground, tennis courts, and hiking and horse trails.

An environmental consultant took soil samples from the park Friday through Monday and submitted them Tuesday to a lab for testing. Results are expected this week. Park officials say the amount of lead contamination will determine the extent of park cleanup and how long it takes to reopen it.

"There is some indication of some lead left over from buckshot from a 1967 shooting range there when we acquired the land" for the park, parks spokeswoman Jane Kolb said.

She said the danger to the community is not known.
