SOFTWARE VENDER LICENSES OCM INTERFACE ON LINUX.

PolyServe Matrix Server(TM) shared data clustering software now supports Oracle(R) Database 10g on Linux. Already used widely in deployments of Oracle9i Real Application Clusters (RAC See remote access concentrator. ), PolyServe Matrix Server software dramatically simplifies the cluster and storage management of Oracle Database 10g on Linux-based servers.

PolyServe Matrix Server complements new Oracle Database 10g storage management features, such as Automatic Storage Management (ASM (1) (Association for Systems Management) An international membership organization based in Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1947 and disbanded in 1996, it sponsored conferences in all phases of administrative systems and management. ), by simplifying cluster installation and maintenance, significantly improving data-loading performance by enabling parallel Extract Transform and Load (ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) The functions performed when pulling data out of one database and placing it into another of a different type. ETL is used to migrate data, often from relational databases into decision support systems. ) operations clusterwide, and adding valuable high-availability features, such as multi-path I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

Oracle recommends that Oracle Database 10g be deployed with ASM and a cluster file system (CFS CFS

). A cornerstone of PolyServe Matrix Server is a powerful CFS that enables a shared Oracle home, among numerous other benefits. The PolyServe CFS is the first general-purpose CFS to support Oracle Database 10g on Linux.

"PolyServe's early support of Oracle Database 10g is another illustration of our commitment to the Oracle data center customer," said Michael Callahan, chief technology officer for PolyServe. "As it does with Oracle9i RAC, Matrix Server provides database and systems administrators with the simplest option for deploying and managing clustered Oracle10g databases in production, real-world environments."

PolyServe Matrix Server consists of a general-purpose CFS for scalable data sharing The ability to share the same data resource with multiple applications or users. It implies that the data are stored in one or more servers in the network and that there is some software locking mechanism that prevents the same set of data from being changed by two people at the same time. , high-availability (HA) services that increase system uptime, and cluster and storage management capabilities for managing servers and storage as a single unit from a single console.

Matrix Server is both general purpose in its support of multiple mission-critical applications -- such as file serving, e-mail, and Web and media serving -- and is highly optimized for Oracle Database 10g and other Oracle databases.

PolyServe is the first independent software vendor to license from Oracle and implement the Oracle Disk Manager (ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) A contract manufacturer that uses its own designs and intellectual property (IP). See contract manufacturer. ) interface on Linux. The ODM implementation ensures tight interoperability between Matrix Server software and Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Database 10g RAC, Oracle9i RAC and other Oracle database products.

Unlike the Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS OCFS Office of Children and Family Services
OCFS Oracle Cluster File System
), Matrix Server software enhances Oracle Database 10g by enabling higher levels of the following:

-- Manageability: Matrix Server provides a single Oracle home for all servers in a cluster, and support for Oracle Managed Files and Oracle Tablespaces. In addition, Matrix Server supports roll-through upgrades to eliminate patch-related downtime and the co-existence of both Oracle9i and Oracle10g instances in a cluster. As a result, an administrator has a single point to install and update Oracle clusterwide.

-- Scalability: Matrix Server fully supports ODM for optimized I/O performance and supports clusters of up to 16 servers running multiple Oracle database workloads.

-- Availability: Matrix Server enables fault-tolerant database clusters with integrated HA capabilities and MPIO functionality that eliminates single points of failure.

PolyServe Matrix Server supports customer choice through its flexible deployment options for Oracle Database 10g. With PolyServe, customers can store Oracle data files on a raw partition managed by ASM and still reap the benefits of a shared Oracle home for superior management and roll-through upgrades. Alternatively, they can choose to store both Oracle data files and non-Oracle data in a single, shared Matrix Server file system. Using PolyServe's ODM implementation, customers gain the same level of performance as a raw partition coupled with the superior manageability and availability benefits of Matrix Server. Regardless of their choice, customers gain simplified cluster and storage management of their Oracle Database 10g deployment and increased system uptime.

Technology Leadership in the Oracle Data Center

PolyServe boasts a number of industry achievements in advancing the state-of-the-art in Oracle database clustering in the Linux-based data center. At Oracle World in September 2003, PolyServe presented the findings of the largest, most flexible clustered Oracle database system for Linux. The findings showcased a 16-node database cluster running three databases. The test showed the benefits of on-demand scalability and flexibility of large Linux clusters, while maintaining high availability.

In 2002, PolyServe unveiled the world's largest clustered Oracle database on Linux proof of concept. Verified by IDC, the work demonstrated an online transaction processing See transaction processing and OLCP.  (OLTP (OnLine Transaction Processing) See transaction processing and OLCP.

Price and Availability

As a result of new Oracle Database 10g pricing and packaging, PolyServe has adjusted its pricing to coincide with the new Oracle Database 10g packaging options. PolyServe Matrix Server software, with support for Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition, is available immediately on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux (often abbreviated to RHEL) is a Linux distribution produced by Red Hat and targeted toward the commercial market, including mainframes. Red Hat commits to supporting each version of RHEL for 7 years after its release.  and SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) is a Linux distribution supplied by Novell, targeted at the business market. It is targeted for servers, but can be installed on Desktop computers for testing as well. New versions are released at an interval of 18-24 months.  with pricing starting at $4,500 per CPU CPU

For Oracle Database 10g Standard Edition, PolyServe Matrix Server software is available immediately on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server starting at $3,000 per CPU for up to a maximum of four CPUs clusterwide. PolyServe will support Oracle Database 10g on Microsoft(R) Windows(R) platforms immediately following its general availability from Oracle.
