SOFTWARE ETC. REPORTS EARLY HOLIDAY SALES

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Software Etc. Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: SFWR) reported November sales of $21.8 million, up 17 percent from the previous year. Comparable store sales were down 6 percent.
Company President and CEO Dan DeMatteo said that Software Etc.'s November sales performance was due to weaker-than-anticipated sales of video game software and systems, and a seasonal shift from November to December due to an additional full shopping day between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
"While we are disappointed with November video game results, they came on top of a 38 percent comp store gain in the video game category last year -- the result of exceptionally hot new products," DeMatteo said. Historically the majority of the company's video game sales occur during the month of December, he said.
The company's sales of personal computer software and related products were on track with company plans in November, DeMatteo said. "We are not affected as dramatically as some of our competitors when specific categories have weak sales given the diversity of our product mix, which includes PC education, entertainment and productivity software, PC upgrades, supplies and accessories, and CD-ROM software -- all of which exhibited comp store sales gains in November," he said.
Software Etc. operates 331 stores throughout the United States, 68 of which were opened this year. The company's stores stock broad assortments of home PC and video game software and related products.
