Avid Technology, Inc NASDAQ: AVID is an American company specializing in video and audio production technology; specifically, digital non-linear media editing (NLE) , Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on :AVID), today announced that the SOFTIMAGE(R)|XSI(TM) v1.5 system will be entering beta testing (programming) beta testing - Testing a pre-release (potentially unreliable) version of a piece of software by making it available to selected users. This term derives from early 1960s terminology for product cycle checkpoints, first used at IBM but later standard throughout the soon after IBC 2000, just five months after the initial product launch at NAB 2000. The SOFTIMAGE|XSI v1.5 system will be showcased at the Avid/Softimage booth (5.230) during IBC 2000, which runs from September 8-12, 2000 at the RAI rai n. "The beginning of this beta program clearly shows that the years of hard work that went into building the XSI architecture are paying off," says Richard Spohrer, Product Director of SOFTIMAGE|XSI. "By building a solid foundation, we are now able to incorporate new tools and functionality quickly, giving our users the competitive edge that is crucial in this market." Building on the solid platform of version 1, the SOFTIMAGE|XSI v1.5 system possesses a host of new and improved features including a comprehensive set of polygon modeling tools, sub-division surfaces and new texture mapping In computer graphics, the application of a type of surface to a 3D image. A texture can be uniform, such as a brick wall, or irregular, such as wood grain or marble. The common method is to create a 2D bitmapped image of the texture, called a "texture map," which is then "wrapped around" features. These added features, among many others, are a testament to the rapid development process and product functionality of the SOFTIMAGE|XSI system. --New polygon modeling tools: designed for rapid and interactive creation and editing of complex polygon The term complex polygon can mean two different things:
--New subdivision surface A subdivision surface, in the field of 3D computer graphics, is a method of representing a smooth surface via the specification of a coarser piecewise linear polygon mesh. The smooth surface can be calculated from the coarse mesh as the limit of an iterative process of subdividing tools: take full advantage of the new polygon modeler, and add the ability to work with multiple levels of resolution and multiple iterations of rounding. --New texture UV editor: allows artists to edit UV data on polygon meshes and surface meshes, in addition to warping the UVs on single surfaces. Users may also work with multiple levels of UV coordinates on single objects. Other highlights include a SOFTIMAGE|XSI software version of the Dopesheet tool, a visual interface for manipulating keyframe data which proved very popular in the SOFTIMAGE|3D system. The spreadsheet tool has also been re-instated, and takes full advantage of the powerful scripting capabilities of the XSI system. "We've used SOFTIMAGE|XSI v1 for many productions since the beginning, and any questions that I may have had about SOFTIMAGE|XSI v1, have now been addressed with the 1.5 beta," comments Greg Punchatz, Director of Animation, at Janimation. "Sub-division surfaces, the Dopesheet, killer snap tools, the UV Texture Editor and the best polygon tools I've ever seen dramatically improve the workflow and toolset of XSI. I couldn't have asked for a more robust set of features to be added to the 1.5 release." "This new version is a complete, fully featured special effects special effects, in motion pictures, cinematographic techniques that create illusions in the audience's minds as well as the illusions created using these techniques. powerhouse," adds Anthony Rossano, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , Mesmer Inc. "The new snapping system, polygon modeling tools, subdiv surfaces and Booleans really round out my modeling bag of tricks. I'm also really excited to explore the rendering capabilities particularly in the area of global illumination and final gathering, while the particle, cloth, fluid and softbody simulations are going to be a big help for my physically based animation projects."
