SOFTER SCHEDULE FOR BRUINS.

Milhorn knew the Bruins were replacing three unflappable seniors - Kris Johnson, Toby Bailey John Garfield "Toby" Bailey (born November 19 1975 in Los Angeles, California, United States) is an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball at UCLA and was one of the stars of their 1995 National Championship team.  and J.R. Henderson - with a slew of wide-eyed underclassmen. Fourteen of UCLA's 16 players will be freshmen or sophomores. The lone senior, guard Brandon Loyd, played sparingly last year and is not expected to start. The only junior, Sean Farnham, is a walk-on.

So Milhorn's schedule does not include a Duke, Illinois, New Mexico or Las Vegas road trip. Instead, the Bruins will prep for a rugged Pac-10 - this year, it might be as good as the ACC See adaptive cruise control.  - with Santa Clara, Delaware State, UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas , Cal State Northridge, American and Loyola Marymount at Pauley Pavilion.

There are no nonconference road games in November or December.

``I don't want to be too quick to judge,'' coach Steve Lavin said. ``But in theory, the thinking was we're reloading Reloading

, and it would be wise to create a schedule that would let us gain confidence in the preseason.''

, the Bruins face San Francisco in the first round, Maryland in the semifinals (if form holds) and mighty Kentucky in the finals. A week later, they play Oklahoma State in the Wooden Classic on Dec. 5 at the Anaheim Pond.

The Louisville series reaches a long-overdue conclusion Jan. 23. (Next year, North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), South Carolina and Georgia (S), Tennessee (W), and Virginia (N). Facts and Figures

Roster update: Kevin Daley's transfer to Azusa Pacific gives the Bruins an additional scholarship. They had hoped to add Patreck Ceresa, a 6-foot-8 forward/center from Switzerland, but he did not survive the complicated eligibility process for European players.

Recruiting update: Lavin has three scholarships available for the 1999-2000 season and is recruiting five - oops, make that three - players to fill the spots: Alameda power forward Justin Davis and Cerritos forward Andrew Gooden recently committed to Cal and Kansas, respectively.

That leaves Kareem Rush, a 6-4 shooter from Kansas City and brother of current freshman JaRon Rush; Carlos Boozer, a top forward from Juneau, Alaska, and Jason Kapono, the masterful forward from Artesia, on UCLA's short list.

Davis update: Baron Davis continues to rehabilitate his surgically repaired left knee, but UCLA has set no date for his return.

``He's making progress and is on track for a full rehabilitation,'' Lavin said, declining to give an estimate.

The best guess: mid-December. Whether Davis regains top form by March, well, that's another matter.
