SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS: TAMAI LEADS POWERFUL EAGLES INTO SECTION TITLE SHOWDOWN.

Byline: Rizza Yap Daily News Staff Writer

Julia Tamai is a pitcher's worst nightmare. The Cornerstone Christian High senior batted .671 during the regular season and currently owns a 1.000 slugging percentage In baseball statistics, slugging percentage (abbreviated SLG) is the most popular measure of the power of a hitter. It is calculated as total bases divided by at bats: . Bound for Wright State in Dayton, Ohio Dayton is a city in southwestern Ohio, United States. It is the county seat and largest city of Montgomery County. As of the 2005 census estimate, the population of Dayton was 158,873.  this fall, Tamai - with just one game remaining in her prep softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  career - has struck out just once in the last two years.

Yet on a sunny Thursday afternoon at the Cornerstone Christian softball field, Tamai takes no credit for her team's successful run. Today the Eagles (20-3) face Lone Pine (19-6-1) for the Southern Section Division VI championship, and Tamai said only one factor has brought them this far.

``There's no real standout player here,'' she said, watching her teammates practice while she sat cross-legged in a shady spot near right field. ``We have so many talented players that if someone is having a bad game, someone else will step up - freshman, sophomore, junior, whatever. Everyone contributes on our team.''

For the second time in Tamai's four years at Cornerstone Christian, the Eagles will battle for their first-ever Southern Section crown in softball. They upset Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3.  to reach the finals in 1995 then advanced to the semifinal round in both 1996 and 1997. The Eagles also are benefitting from multi-faceted players since five members - Alizabeth Johnston, Lisa Gin, Tamai, Becker and Monzo - are three-varsity sport athletes.
