SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS: BORON SEEKING ITS FIRST SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP : IT HAS REACHED SEMIS 4 TIMES IN '90S.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3.  High is the only undefeated softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team in California. However, 24 straight victories won't mean a thing if the Bobcats don't defeat defending Southern Section Division VI-champion Cornerstone Christian of Camarillo in the title game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.

Boron has had formidable teams throughout the 1990s but has never won a championship. The Bobcats lost two years ago to Temecula Linfield 3-0 in the Division V final, and they've reached the semifinals four times this decade.

Perhaps pitcher Jennifer Jenkins will be the difference.

The 5-foot-9 junior right-hander has had a spectacular season. She's 24-0 and had yielded just one earned all season before Victor Valley Christian scored three times in the first inning of Boron's 4-3 semifinal win on Friday.

She has a 0.20 ERA, 16 shutouts and 192 strikeouts in 141 innings.

``I was a little bit nervous against Victor Valley. I thought there was a slight chance we were going to lose,'' Jenkins said. ``But I knew we had the bats to come back. We've been playing as a team all season, we all get along, and that's why we keep winning.''

Center fielder Trisha Ballinger, a three-year starter who scored the tying run against Victor Valley, shares Jenkins' confidence.

``I knew we could come back,'' Ballinger said. ``We just showed that we knew how to play, and I was pumped.''

Condor League-champion Cornerstone, which has a student enrollment of 84 compared to Boron's 210, is 19-6 after entering the playoffs as the No. 3 seed.

However, the Eagles have seen better competition than Boron this season. Five of their six losses have been one-run setbacks against much larger schools, including Nordhoff, La Salle La Salle, city (1990 pop. 9,717), La Salle co., N Ill., on the Illinois River; settled 1830, inc. 1852. It forms a tricity unit with Peru and Oglesby. Corn, wheat, and soybeans are grown, and cattle and hogs are raised. , Linfield and Hueneme. Nordhoff has 1,250 students, La Salle 755, Linfield 1,758 and Hueneme 2,200.

Boron swept 1,800-student Barstow in an early-season doubleheader but has otherwise built its record against marginal opponents.

Cornerstone sophomore right-hander Julia Hartnell (18-6, 0.29 ERA) has proved herself almost as good as Jenkins. She has 215 strikeouts in 146 innings (10.3 per seven innings) and five no-hitters. Opponents are batting .088 against her, compared to .111 for Jenkins.

Boron's top hitters are Jenkins, Coni Nelson, Lisa Oates and Emily Palmquist. Jenkins is batting .473 with three home runs and 25 runs batted in. Nelson, a junior third baseman third baseman
