SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS: BIG LEAGUE HITS BIG TIME : ALL-STARS REACH NATIONALS.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

The Antelope Valley-based District 51 Big League All-Stars (18-and-under) bid for the region's third consecutive Little League softball national championship next week in Kalamazoo, Mich.

District 51 won the Big League World Series two years ago, followed by Lancaster Park View's Senior Softball (13-15 year-olds) national championship in 1997.

Six Big League players (Kristi DiMarco, Jennifer Durost, Ruth Gleich, Summer Richardson, Amber Slaton and Alena Valdez) were on the 1996 team.

CSUN-bound Richardson pitched District 51 into the World Series by shutting down Hawaii 12-1 in the regional final Thursday night at Palmdale Massari Park. Richardson, who did not allow a runner past second base until the last inning Thursday, has not allowed an earned run earned run

District 51 features six recently graduated All-Southern Section starters, several of them college-scholarship players. But the regional wins did not all come easily. After beating Hawaii 6-1 in the opener, District 51 barely squeaked by the other District 51 contingent - District 51 Teal - by a 2-1 score. Then Hawaii came back with a 4-2 afternoon win Thursday to force the final elimination game.
