SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK; AFTER LAYOFF, HART SURVIVES STIFF TESTS.

Byline: Anel Laj Staff Writer

After 16 days off from competition, the Hart girls' softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team returned to a difficult week of Foothill League play. Nevertheless, the Indians persevered.

Hart returned in top form, beating two Foothill League contenders - Saugus and Valencia. The Indians (14-3, 4-0) are the league's only undefeated team entering today's game against Canyon (13-7, 3-2), a team that will also be a test for the Indians.

Saugus (14-7, 3-2) challenged Hart by committing just one fielding error. The Centurions, who tied for first with the Indians last season, have two league losses, both in extra innings Noun 1. extra innings - overtime play until one team is ahead at the end of an inning; e.g. baseball

Canyon and Saugus are tied after the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

``Even if there were no outs, I would have gone for it,'' said Mann. ``If you can touch the ball, why not?''

Saugus center fielder Kelli Cornelison returned the favor by making a game-saving play of her own. She fielded a ball and had a perfect throw to home plate to get Hart's Carly Caldaronello in the bottom of the eighth inning.

``It was just an awesome play by their center fielder,'' said Caldaronello. ``I went in as hard as I could, but it was just such a good throw.''

--Leading the defense Hart shortstop Caldaronello, who was switched from second base to short at the beginning of the season, had 14 putouts in two games. She had 11 in the Indians' 11-inning 1-0 victory over Saugus.

Caldaronello made solid stops against the Centurions, including two in the bottom of the ninth inning to retire Jennifer McLarty and Amy Snyder.

--Higher learning: Hart's Danielle Cole, who catches and plays in the outfield, recently accepted a scholarship to UC Davis and will attend the school in the fall.

--Big hitters: Valencia catcher Lauren Watson continues to lead the league in batting at .438. Watson, who went 2 for 3 in the Vikings' 5-2 loss to Hart, has 21 hits, including three doubles.

The next best hitter is Burroughs' Sara Larquier, who has 20 hits and is batting .417.

--Tourney time: This weekend, Valencia and Hart will participate in the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964.
