SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK: TOUGH STRETCH DOWN STRETCH.

If there's one thing the Hart High softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team will be by the time Southern Section playoff seedings are announced Monday, it's tired.

Hart played four games last week, three games the week before and will play three games this week.

--Krallis moves to catcher: It's been quite a year for Hart senior Erin Krallis. She started the year in a slump, left the team for four games, was suspended for another four games by Hart coach Cathy Giordano, returned to have one of her best offensive days against Saugus and now has moved to catcher.

Giordano made the change against Canyon on Thursday and Krallis, who usually plays first base, has done well in the three games she's played catcher.

``She caught a little bit as a freshman on JV,'' Giordano said. ``But she's doing an excellent job back there. She handles the pitchers really well and has a great presence that I think makes us a much better team.''

--Flaherty could miss three weeks: Hart senior center fielder Meaghan Flaherty could miss three weeks with a thumb injury suffered against Westlake on Friday.

Flaherty leads off for Hart and is among the area leaders in stolen bases. She might have torn ligaments in her thumb diving back into a base. Flaherty plans to get a second opinion from the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California.
