SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK: T.O. LANCERS IN GOOD SPIRITS.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

You'd think the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  High softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team could breathe, if not relax, after opening Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. ? Not a factor.

``The game (with Agoura) is just as important,'' Walin said after Thousand Oaks moved into first place following Tuesday's 2-0 win over Westlake of Westlake Village. ``We don't take one game more important than any other. What will happen is kids will get in the habit of looking forward so much to one game and with that game, all of a sudden there's that huge letdown letdown

There was no emotional free fall after Thousand Oaks won its league opener 3-1 at Simi Valley. The Lancers scored a convincing 3-0 shutout at defending co-champion Newbury Park. That was followed by a splendid pitching performance by Nicole Angelo and flawless defense against Westlake.

Walin admitted the Lancers didn't establish anything concrete with their early success. But that doesn't mean Thousand Oaks is lacking confidence.

``We had the three toughest games right away and I have a feeling that's going to make a big statement of what our team can do,'' Angelo said. ``I think (Newbury Park) was our biggest win. That win lifted our spirits up.''

--Changing for the better: Hart of Newhall continues to thrive amid a challenging nonleague schedule and massive position changes. The Indians pounded Chaminade of West Hills 9-0 on Tuesday and improved to 7-0.

Hart coach Cathy Giordano had to shift almost every returning player's regular position from last season. Jocelyn Evans moved from third base to first base, Carly Caldaronello migrated from second base to shortstop and Stacey Holbrook switched from center field to second base.

``We've already had a couple of (defensive) nightmares. I don't want to see anymore of those,'' Giordano said.

The defense is steadily improving, and whatever deficiencies there are, Hart has superior pitching. A deep staff is led by Illinois-bound Amanda Fortune (4-0).
