SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK: SOFTBALL'S BEST PLAY.

Many of the region's outstanding softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  players are competing in the ASA Asa (ā`sə), in the Bible, king of Judah, son and successor of Abijah. He was a good king, zealous in his extirpation of idols. When Baasha of Israel took Ramah (a few miles N of Jerusalem), Asa bought the help of Benhadad of Damascus and  national championships in Marietta, Ga. this week.

The 71-team, double-elimination playoffs started on Wednesday.

The Valley Breeze, which finished fourth last year and second in 1999, went 1-1 in pool play but beat the Colorado Legends 1-0 in eight innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Cunn. L. Dict. h. t.; Law of Sewers, 31.  in the first round of the playoffs.

Daily News Player of the Year Lauren Watson of Valencia High scored the winning run on a wild pitch after walking and stealing second. Right-hander Sara Gonzales of Paraclete of Quartz Hill relieved Jackie Brown and got the win.

``It's wide open this year. I don't see any dominating team,'' assistant coach Henry Baeza said.

Another team to watch is the Orange County-based Gordon's Panthers, led by former Highland High of Palmdale catcher Ashlie D'Errico. D'Errico, who is going to University of the Pacific in Stockton, lost to Katy 2-1 in pool play, but the team has won its other two matchups, including a 1-0 playoff play·off also play-off
