Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3.  High, coming off Tuesday's 19-0 victory over Hesperia Christian, has done a good job of rebounding from its surprising 0-3 start.

Led by senior right-hander Jennifer Jenkins, the Bobcats (5-3) have won five in a row heading into Friday's 3:15 p.m. nonleague game at Foothill of Bakersfield.

what happened in the beginning, but we've gotten our act together,'' said Jenkins, taking a break between classes on Wednesday. ``I think we'll be OK because we're moving up.''

Jenkins (5-2) held Hesperia Christian to one hit and was aided by Veronica Valdez's three-run homer in the second inning. Jenkins is attempting to return to the form that helped her win an area-best 24 games last year.

. The Antelopes fell to 1-5 after Tuesday's 14-0 nonleague loss to Granite Hills of Apple Valley.

``It's just kind of the same old story,'' coach Kristi Speir said. ``We're all really young, we made a lot of errors and we weren't ready to play.''

How many errors are too many?

``At least 10,'' Speir said. ``After a while, our scorekeeper score·keep·er

Antelope Valley's biggest problem is pitching. Kelly Bleyl pitched every inning last year but has moved on, and sophomores Amanda Mathias and Traci Nolte have been trying to fill in. But Mathias is a natural shortstop and Nolte a catcher.

``We're kind of back to step one,'' Speir said. ``It's going to take a couple of years.''

Infielder Jennifer Smith There are at least six prominent individuals named Jennifer Smith:

--Gone batty: Quartz Hill coach Coy Ray was wondering why his team needs so many bats: ``Ten bats for 14 girls? When I was in high school we had one bat for the whole team.''

--Welcome to the machine: Lancaster's Tara Jensen and Palmdale's Monique Saldana, two of the Golden League's premier sluggers, are best friends. They go to the batting cages together all the time.

``Monique does a little better than me,'' said Jensen, who nonetheless has two home runs. ``I think she might be a better hitter.''

--Error of their ways: Lancaster needs to shore up its defense. The Eagles (4-5) committed 16 errors during a recent three-game stretch.

--Booth better: Quartz Hill infielder Jamie Booth, expected to be one of the Golden League's top hitters this season, started 0 for 10 but then went 7 for 12. She was 1 for 3 with a double in Tuesday's 3-0 loss to Valencia and her average is up to .292.
