The softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team lost to Golden League rival Lancaster by the same 6-5 score in the seventh-place game of the High Desert Classic softball tournament Monday night.

Coach Glenda Potts was disappointed by the losses, but more so at the fashion in which they occurred.

``Right at the end of the game we're losing,'' Potts said. ``We're in every single game, but it just seems like the kids lose their focus and start making errors.''

Highland finished 1-3 in the tournament after beginning with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Sultana, in which junior catcher Jennifer Doepking singled in Lauren Tatlinger with the game-winning run in the seventh inning in·ning

But it was Highland's opponents with the big plays in its other three games.

On Monday night, Highland led Lancaster 5-0, but costly defensive errors let Lancaster back into the game it eventually won 6-5.

It was similar to Saturday's 6-5 loss to Millikan. Highland's Brittany Housinger tripled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, driving in three runs, but was tagged out at the plate trying to extend it to a home run.

In the top of the sixth inning, Millikan's Tanya Wolley drove in Jessica Sandoval in for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill had the best showing.

The Rebels finished fifth in the tournament with a 9-1 victory over Harvard-Westlake of Studio City on Monday night.

Quartz Hill also defeated Golden League rival Lancaster 12-5 on Saturday.

Despite injuries to pitcher Amanda Riley and first baseman Katie Cornelison, Lancaster also had a strong showing, finishing seventh with victories over Chaminade of West Hills and Highland.

Senior pitcher Tara Urbanski started all four of Lancaster's games and is its only true pitcher with the injury to Riley.
