A lot of the talk this season has centered on Valencia High's ``Fab Four'' freshman, who have stepped in for five players now competing in college and have led the Vikings to an 8-1 start.

Hart softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  coach Cathy Giordano has no problem with that. She has some talented freshmen herself, with Jessica Fridwall and Caitlin Stiglich.

``They're just good ballplayers,'' Giordano said. ``They've got great instincts for the game.''

So despite their lack of varsity experience, Giordano has put them into the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .
A starting lineup in sports refers to the set of players actively participating in the event when the game begins. The players in the starting lineup are commonly referred to as starters, whereas the others are substitutes
at key positions to shore up the defense.

Stiglich has been doing well behind the plate and will start at catcher. She does a good job handling the pitchers and is very assertive for a young player directing traffic.

Fridwall has started at second base and has impressed Giordano with her knowledge of the game.

Hart only is 2-3 thus far but all three losses have come against good teams. So have the two victories. The Indians are off until Saturday, when they have a doubleheader with Agoura. But Giordano said the layoff is actually a good thing so the team can work on its defense, which has cost them in the three losses this year.

--Valencia running smooth: Although Hart has struggled with new faces playing in different places, Valencia has made an almost seamless transition.

The Vikings have eight new players on varsity but are 8-1, including a doubleheader sweep of Camarillo, the Daily News' preseason No. 1 team.

``It feels like a new team, it is a whole new team,'' senior pitcher Christina Ross said. ``There's like eight of 'em ... I think this year's team gets along a lot better. They're fun to be around, they're a great group of girls.''

--Baughman emerges: It must be nice to have a pitcher such as Courtney Baughman who can come from junior varsity junior varsity
