Simple math will show only three area teams have the potential to advance to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Div. I playoffs Thursday and only two can be in the semifinals next Tuesday.

That's because of the six area teams playing today in the second round of the Div. I playoffs, four are playing each other.

Hart (21-8) lost a coin flip and will play at Camarillo (23-6), and Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  (21-5) will travel to Quartz Hill (21-4). And the two teams not playing against an area rival - Valencia (27-3) and Simi Valley (19-6) - face tough road games after losing coin flips. Second-seeded Valencia will travel to Lakewood (19-7), and Simi Valley will play at Los Alamitos Los Alamitos (lôs ăləmē`təs, lŏs), city (1990 pop. 11,676), Orange co., NE of Long Beach, S Calif., in a suburban area; inc. 1960. Los Alamitos Racetrack and U.S. military installations are nearby.  (22-10).

``We knew we were going to have to go on the road at some point, so I'd rather it be in the second round than in the quarters or semis,'' Valencia catcher Jaisa Creps said. ``But everyone in Div. I is really good this year.''

--Which Hart will it be? Hart has the best team speed in the area and when it is playing its best, it seems as if it can beat anybody. The problem is, it's hard to predict when that team will show up or when the lethargic, underachieving Hart team will show up.

``We just have to play our game and play within ourselves,'' senior catcher Erin Krallis said. ``Sometimes we let our mind get in the way. Our game plan is to get someone on base and put pressure on the defense every inning in·ning

--Making a road trip out of it: Village Christian of Sun Valley (19-6) is the top seed in Div. V but they lost a coin flip and have to travel to High Desert League champion Bishop for their second-round game. Coach Jim Stone, though, decided to take advantage of the Memorial Day holiday by traveling to Bishop on Monday morning.
