SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK: DON'T HOLD BACK THOUSAND OAKS PLAYS FULL SPEED.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

An aggressive game plan on the bases has been a key to the Lancers' 2000 portfolio, which already includes a state ranking, a Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Thousand Oaks, which also features a balanced offense, an ace pitcher in Nicole Angelo and a superb defense, figures to be one of the favorites in the Southern Section playoffs.

But last week's 2-0 loss to Oak Ridge Oak Ridge, city (1990 pop. 27,310), Anderson and Roane counties, E Tenn., on Black Oak Ridge and the Clinch River; founded by the U.S. government 1942, inc. as an independent city 1959.  of Sacramento at the Arroyo Grande Tournament taught the Lancers lanc·er

 a valuable lesson.

Oak Ridge catcher Leah Hornsby has what coach Gary Walin called one of the best throwing arms he's ever seen. When the Lancers played Oak Ridge, Walin was told Hornsby had allowed one stolen base during her four-year high school career.

The Lancers did manage one steal in the game, but they've been averaging almost four a game and broke last year's school record of 77.

Although Thousand Oaks has speedsters such as Michelle Spencer (23 steals) and Sheridan Fowler (22) among others, Oak Ridge dictated what the Lancers couldn't do because of Hornsby.

``That game showed if we run into a team with a strong catcher, our speed probably won't be nearly as effective,'' Walin said.

--Battle-tested: Thousand Oaks will get somewhat of a reprieve this week with a Marmonte League bye on Thursday following Tuesday's game against Agoura.

The Lancers played six games against tough competition last week. Thousand Oaks lost only to Oak Ridge and beat Cajon, Atascadero and Chaminade at the Arroyo Grande tournament and defeated Valencia and Harvard-Westlake at the Lancers' own event on Saturday.

Walin planned to give his team today off and then get in light workouts on Thursday and Friday in preparation for Saturday's Thousand Oaks tournament semifinal with Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

--A good sign: Camarillo's 3-0 loss to Hart in the quarterfinals of the Thousand Oaks tournament isn't any reason for the Scorpions to panic if the teams meet again in the Southern Section playoffs.

Granted, Camarillo's offense was stymied by Hart pitcher Amanda Fortune, who tossed a two-hit shutout. But Fortune (9-1, 0.10 ERA) has similarly dominated most of the Indians' opponents.

Camarillo pitcher Kathryn Nevard, who, like Fortune, is bound for Illinois, retired 17 of the 18 batters she faced, 11 on strikeouts. The only problem for the Scorpions was that Kathryn's twin sister Meredith started the game and allowed three runs in the first inning.

``She has not gotten to throw as much even when you look at a two-year period,'' Scorpions coach Miki Mangan said of Meredith Nevard, who has been a second option behind Kathryn throughout her career. ``She hasn't gotten to throw as much as everyone else.''

Should the teams get a postseason rematch, a Fortune-Kathryn Nevard duel could last well into the evening without a run being scored.

``They're beatable,'' Mangan said of the Indians. ``And we didn't perform today offensively and didn't pick up Meredith at all. . . . We would look forward to a playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff
