SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK: DELFINO INJURED IN HART'S PLAYOFF LOSS.

For Nicole Delfino, Hart High's dramatic 4-3 playoff loss Tuesday at Chino Chino (chē`nō), city (1990 pop. 59,682), San Bernardino co., S Calif.; founded 1887, inc. 1910. Playing catcher in the seventh, Delfino collided with a runner at home plate and twisted her knee. She remained in the game but said she probably tore her ACL See access control list.

. She was scheduled to have the knee examined late Wednesday.

``It was horrible. It was probably the worst feeling I've ever had in my life,'' Delfino said. ``My knee felt (as if) it went out of the socket. It really hurts and it's very swollen.''

Delfino had been enjoying one of her best games of the season. She had singled, doubled and tripled.

``All I needed was a home run and I would have had the cycle,'' she said with a shrug.

To end its season with a loss in a game Hart was leading 3-0 in the final inning made for a long ride home, Delfino said.

She has been selected to represent the East in the 16th annual Daily News All-Star Softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  Game on June 10 at Glendale Sports Complex. She said she's not sure if she'll recover in time.

Delfino plans to play softball at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  next spring.

: Catcher Nicole Lepine of Canyon will attend UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. . But she's not sure she'll play softball.

``For sure I'm going, but the coach there has to look at my video and decide if they're going to give (financial aid),'' Lepine said. ``If not, I can't play because I'll have to be working. I couldn't afford to play and pay for school at the same time.''

--Playoff update: Valencia (25-4-2), which plays host to Etiwanda (21-7) in the Southern Section Division II quarterfinals at 3:15 p.m. today, is the only Santa Clarita-area team alive in the postseason.

Hart lost at Chino in the second round of the Division II playoffs Tuesday. Canyon fell to Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  in the first round in Division II. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Christian lost to Pioneer Baptist of Norwalk in the first round in Division VI.

--Giordano honored: Former softball standout Nicole Giordano, who led Saugus High to a section title in 1996, had her number retired during a ceremony Saturday. Giordano went on to star at Arizona.

``She was thrilled about it,'' said her mother, Cathy, head coach at Hart.

--Back in town: Former Valencia catcher Lauren Watson, who was named 2001 Daily News Softball Player of the Year, is home for the summer after a solid freshman season at Brigham Young. She attended Valencia's first-round victory over Hoover of Glendale.

``It's nice to be back. The field here seems a lot smaller than when I was here last year,'' Watson said.
