High softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  coach Tammy Zimmardi decided to take the job of starting the softball program at the new Knight High in Palmdale Palmdale, city (1990 pop. 68,842), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the irrigated Antelope Valley; a growing residential suburb of Los Angeles near Little Rock Creek where it forms Lake Palmdale Reservoir, inc. 1962.  next season, she wanted to make sure no one read anything into the move.

``It was just a decision I had to make that has nothing to do with my team here at Littlerock,'' Zimmardi said. ``It's exciting on the one hand but depressing on the other because I'm leaving my team here and there's always going to be seniors. The hard part is, I've put my heart and soul into this program and now I'm leaving.''

Knight High will open in the fall with only freshmen.

But before she begins thinking about building the program at Knight, Zimmardi would like to go out strong at Littlerock. The team is 8-7 overall and 0-2 in the Golden League, but it could get back into the race with victories against Highland today and Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. First-place Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill is the only 2-0 league team and four teams are 1-1. Littlerock is alone at 0-2.

``Pretty much one win will put us back into it,'' Zimmardi said. ``We're only one game back of everybody.''

--New attitude at A.V.: It should not be surprising Quartz Hill is the only undefeated team in the league, considering the Rebels have won 10 of the past 12 league titles.

Quartz Hill has outscored its league opponents 21-3. But despite those numbers, Antelope Valley coach Kristi Speir is optimistic op·ti·mist

about her team's chances when it travels to Quartz Hill today at 3:15 p.m.

``I definitely think we can beat them if we keep the ball away from (Jennifer) Curtier and (Nicole) Means,'' Speir said. ``When we beat Highland last week, I think that proved to the girls we could play with the top teams and the girls are probably more confident than they've been in three, four years against Quartz Hill.''

A big reason for the confidence boost is the pitching of junior Jessica Parker, who is among the area's leaders in strikeouts. Parker looked tired in A.V.'s 4-2 loss to Lancaster on Thursday, but she was coming off a 10-strikeout performance in a 2-0 victory over Highland the day before.

--Scandrick streaking: Littlerock senior shortstop Alondra Scandrick is 8 for her past 10 with a triple, double and five runs scored.
