Although the 18-under gold national championships won't happen until Aug. 4-10 in Salem, Ore., the final opportunity for teams to qualify came the weekend of July 12.

For many area players, the dream of playing for a national championship ended, while others were able to qualify despite the mounting pressure of running out of chances.

``I was scared,'' said Westlake High outfielder Monica Gonzales, who plays for the Diamonds. ``I was like, `Let's just win the games and it'll be OK.' Hopefully next year we'll qualify earlier.''

The Diamonds had to leave the Canada Cup early to play in the qualifier. But for a team that played at the 16-under level last season, earning a berth in gold nationals is a solid accomplishment.

The Pride, which consists entirely of local players - most of whom play at Hart of Newhall and Royal of Simi Valley - qualified for its first ASA Asa (ā`sə), in the Bible, king of Judah, son and successor of Abijah. He was a good king, zealous in his extirpation of idols. Davis Batbusters feature Oaks Christian of Westlake Village pitcher Ashlee Freeman and Faith Baptist of Canoga Park's Devina Quintero and Alexis Garcia. The Valley Breeze is led by Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks' Cori Blanton and San Fernando's Selena Salazar.

Among those who didn't qualify were the Southern California Jets, which is headlined by Royal's Devon Hofland and Nichole Mears, the Ballistic of Ventura County, the Spoilers of Glendale and the Orange County Lionettes, which feature Laura Hovestreydt from Verdugo Hills of Tujunga and Danielle Mellin from La Canada.
