SOFTBALL NATIONALS: GUSTAVESON THROWS TWO-HITTER.

Katie Gustaveson didn't have the best ending to her high school career, but she's doing her best to rectify that at the 18-under Gold National softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  championships in Salem, Ore.

Gustaveson is the go-to pitcher for her travel team, the American Pastime, which won both its games Thursday and is through to the third round of the 64-team, double-elimination tournament A double-elimination tournament is a competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches. .

``Last year I was a pick-up player and didn't get to pitch much, so I love being out there on the mound in the big games this year,'' said Gustaveson, who tossed a two-hitter to earn the win in American Pastime's 2-1 victory over Georgia Elite.

Other winners Thursday:

--Village Christian of Sun Valley pitcher Lauren Nydam earned the save in Gordon's Panthers' 1-0 first-round victory over the Texas Hawks. Nydam struck out three of the five batters she faced.

--Valencia pitcher Christina Ross struck out six in the Ringor Athletics' 2-0 first-round victory over Katy (Texas) Express.

--The Worth Firecrackers, featuring Cambria Miranda and De Ann Young from Camarillo High, defeated the Colorado Stars 6-2 in the first round.

--Saugus pitcher Kyla Sullivan earned the win in the Case Batbusters' 5-0 victory over the Colorado Legends in the first round, but her team lost to the Cal Lite 1-0 in the second round.

--The California Cruisers, who feature Stephanie Savre of Westlake, defeated the Oregon Southern Force 2-0 in the first round but lost 1-0 against Impact Gold in the second round.

Teams that lost Thursday fall into the losers' bracket and need to win at least three elimination games today to make it to the weekend.

The Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Pride lost 6-1 to Cal Lite and will face the Colorado Legends at 8:30 a.m. today. Hart of Newhall's Emily Sudik doubled in the first run of the game in the second inning, and the Pride stayed close until Cal Lite scored four runs in the sixth inning.

 Storm, the Ventura County Waves fell to the Blazing Angels, and Glendale-based Panthers Gold lost to Georgia Elite.

Granada Hills pitcher Kat Walsh lost her second 1-0 decision in three days as the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Diamonds fell to the California Breakers.
