Even the defending national champions get nervous sometimes. At least that's how the Orange County Batbusters' opening-game loss looks in hindsight.

With eight seniors bound for Division I colleges, including Valencia High's Jaisa Creps, who will attend UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

, the Batbusters repeated as national champions Sunday with a 5-1 victory over the Virginia Shamrocks at the ASA Asa (ā`sə), in the Bible, king of Judah, son and successor of Abijah. He was a good king, zealous in his extirpation of idols. When Baasha of Israel took Ramah (a few miles N of Jerusalem), Asa bought the help of Benhadad of Damascus and  18-under Gold national softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  championships in Salem, Ore.

``I think that game helped get out all of our nerves,'' said Agoura High's Michelle Smith

The Shamrocks closed within a run in the fourth and the game stayed close until the top of the seventh when UCLA-bound pitcher Lisa Dodd drove in two runs with a single to left-center field.

The victory was the seventh in a row for the Batbusters, who defeated the Worth Firecrackers 3-0 in the winner's bracket final.

The Firecrackers (Cambria Miranda/Camarillo and De Ann Young/ Camarillo) were eliminated by the Shamrocks 9-3 in their next game and finished in third place.

Behind them in the standings were Gordon's Panthers, who were also eliminated 1-0 by the Shamrocks. Village Christian of Sun Valley pitcher Lauren Nydam took the loss against the Shamrocks, yielding only a home run to Stephanie VanBrakle, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year at Alabama last season.
