PLAYER OF THE YEAR

CAMBRIA MIRANDA

Camarillo, Junior

It's not easy to step in for a player like Beth Boskovitch, the Daily News Player of the Year last season. And when Camarillo lost four of its first 10 games, it seemed Boskovitch had left an even bigger hole than anticipated.

But somewhere along the line, Camarillo became Miranda's team, and she led them back to the same spot Boskovitch had the previous season. Again, Camarillo advanced to the Div. I semifinals, the furthest of any local team in that division.

Miranda hit .511, scored 30 runs, had 37 RBI RBI

and added an area-leading 14 doubles. She was the quiet leader behind that charge and was at her best in the playoffs. In Camarillo's quarterfinal victory over Los Alamitos Los Alamitos (lôs ăləmē`təs, lŏs), city (1990 pop. 11,676), Orange co., NE of Long Beach, S Calif., in a suburban area; inc. 1960. Los Alamitos Racetrack and U.S. military installations are nearby. , Miranda was 2 for 3 and drove in the first run of the game with a triple to left field that would've cleared most fences.

A junior this season, Miranda should be one of the most heavily recruited players in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  next season.

PITCHER OF THE YEAR

ASHLEE FREEMAN

Oaks Christian, Senior

The award says Pitcher of the Year but Freeman earned it as much for what she did this season as in her three-year career at Oaks Christian of Westlake Village.

Over that span, Freeman went 60-8 with a 0.196 ERA, 813 strikeouts, 11 no-hitters, 32 shutouts and only 13 earned runs in 464 1/3 innings.

But as impressive as those stats are, there's really no way to quantify what Freeman meant to the Oaks Christian program. Perhaps her coach, Pete Ackermann, said it best: ``She put Oaks Christian on the map.''

Quite simply, no other pitcher in the area was more valuable to her team than Freeman.

Freeman led Oaks Christian to the Div. VI championship game as a sophomore and junior in the school's first two years of existence. This year, after two championship game losses, Freeman, bound for Boston University Boston University, at Boston, Mass.; coeducational; founded 1839, chartered 1869, first baccalaureate granted 1871. It is composed of 16 schools and colleges. , pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine to lead Oaks Christian to a 2-0 victory over Alemany of Mission Hills.

She ended her senior year with a 22-1 record, a 0.09 ERA, 218 strikeouts and allowed two earned runs the entire season.

 STONE Village Christian

All one needs to know about Jim Stone was evidenced at an otherwise meaningless doubleheader in May. Village Christian, with 550 students, had opted to play in the more competitive upper division of the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  tournament and drew traditional area power Westlake and Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:

Santa Ana (sän'tä ä`nä), city (1993 pop. 129,873), W El Salvador. It is the second largest city in the country and the commercial and processing center for a sugarcane, coffee, and cattle region.
, then the No. 5 ranked team in the country.

The Crusaders' best chance for a victory seemed to be if they started two-time, Daily News All-Area pitcher Lauren Nydam against Westlake and then concede a lopsided loss to Mater Dei.

But Stone decided to save Nydam for Mater Dei and started his No. 2 pitcher against Westlake.

``Hey, why not try for the sweep?'' he said with a straight face.

And maybe because of that confidence, Village Christian pulled off the upset of Westlake in dramatic fashion. Then later in the week, they knocked off another strong Div. I team in Hart of Newhall.

After that, winning the first softball Div. V title in school history seemed inevitable for the Crusaders, who defeated Pasadena Poly for the title. Stone, the first-year head coach who only reluctantly took the job in December when no other candidate could be found, is already hard at work lining up opponents for next year.

CHRISTINA ROSS

Valencia, P, Junior

That Ross was a close finisher to Ashlee Freeman for Pitcher of the Year despite pitching only half of her team's games underscores her talent.

Ross is a hard-throwing left-hander with a tough curveball she can throw for a strike on either corner of the plate. She will be one of the most highly recruited area players next season.

This year, she was 13-1 with 11 shutouts, a 0.27 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 103.67 innings as she allowed opponents only a .094 batting average batting average

That's really the only way to describe Lauren Nydam's changeup. Opposing batters know it's coming but that rarely helps.

All of which make Nydam one of the more sought after pitchers in the country this season.

Despite missing the first six weeks of the season because of a shoulder injury suffered in a car crash, Nydam finished the year with a 12-1 record, 0.64 ERA, 129 strikeouts in 98 innings and held opponents to a .132 batting average. That led Village Christian of Sun Valley to its first Div. V softball title.

Teammates and coaches took to calling Hovestreydt, ``Pig Pen'' for her aggressive style of play that left her uniform covered in dirt. But the coaches at Cal State Northridge, who signed Hovestreydt after the season, noticed more than her hustle.

Hovestreydt led the area with 13 home runs and she hit .430 with 36 RBI.

CHANEL ROEHNER

Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , P, Junior

Not many players or coaches in the Marmonte League figured Simi Valley would be much of a factor this season. Even fewer figured that Roehner would be the Most Valuable Pitcher at the end of the season.

But Roehner, a right-hander who keeps batters off-balance, seemingly willed her team to the Marmonte League title. For the year, she was 19-5 with 142 strikeouts and a 0.54 ERA. That earned her CalHiSports All-State recognition as an underclassman.

DEVON HOFLAND

Royal, IF, Sophomore

Royal of Simi Valley will graduate five key starters from this season's team, but many coaches in the Marmonte League are picking them to contend for the title again next season. Mears proved she belonged with the area's top power-hitters when she had three tape-measure shots in the home run contest of the Daily News All-Star softball game.

Royal of Simi Valley played 12 games in the Marmonte League, easily the toughest league in the area, and most of its nonleague games were against top competition from Orange County. But none of those pitchers bothered Mears, who will attend Rider University Rider University is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian university located chiefly in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, in Mercer County. If statistics ever spoke for themselves, Walsh's line for this season is it.

The junior right-hander went 22-4 with seven no-hitters, five of which came in consecutive games. In 183 innings, Walsh had an area-leading 296 strikeouts and a 0.99 ERA as she led Granada Hills to their best playoff run since 1995.

Peek will most likely have 10-15 full scholarship offers from Div. I schools this fall after only her first season of playing softball. Before this season, when she burst on the scene with a .506 batting average, Peek was a standout baseball player.

Playing baseball gave her a competitive drive not always seen in teenage girls and helped her develop into one of the area's most feared hitters and best defensive catchers.

There's a certain pressure, and honor, that comes with being the only freshman selected first-team Daily News All-Area but absolutely no one who knows Enea doubts she can handle it.

El Camino Real of Woodland Hills coach Lori Chandler was wary of heaping too much attention on Enea at the start of the season, preferring to downplay Enea's talent until she proved it on the field.

Others worried Enea would struggle to overcome the expectations that come with being the younger sister of Christina Enea, an All-American at Oklahoma.

Consider those fears unfounded after Enea hit .465 with five doubles, four triples, four home runs and 37 RBI, which tied with Cambria Miranda of Camarillo for the area lead in RBI.

ASHLEY HERRERA

Valencia, IF, Senior

Statistics hardly do justice to the way Herrera plays. She led the Vikings with a .356 average, six home runs and was named to the CalHiSports Second-Team All-State team.

But to truly appreciate Herrera, one had to attend a game and watch her throw out runners from deep in the hole at shortstop or fly around the bases after hitting a line drive past outfielders who underestimated the wiry wir·y

Fortunately, for those who missed seeing her in high school, Herrera will be playing for national champion UCLA for the next four years.

JENNIFER CURTIER

Quartz Hill, IF, Senior

When Curtier gets to Pacific University in Stockton next season, she'd be well advised not to speak with any of the opposing pitchers in the Big West Conference or it might undermine the fearsome reputation she established at Quartz Hill.

Pitchers in the Golden League began to pitch around the soft-spoken, left- handed slugger last season and continued that practice this year. Still, Curtier had her finest offensive season, batting .514 with 24 RBI and six home runs and led Quartz Hill to the second round of the Div. I playoffs.

KRYSTLE CHAMBERLAIN

Camarillo, OF, Senior

Opposing catchers can relax now that Chamberlain has graduated and moved on to college. Chamberlain broke the area record for career stolen bases as a junior last season and added 22 steals this year. That sets the mark at 152 for all future base-stealers.

She batted .426, scored 35 runs with an on-base-percentage of .514 as Camarillo returned to the Div. I semifinals.

If Chanel Roehner was the key to Simi Valley's defense, then Modglin was the key to its offense. The speedy right-handed table-setter hit .367, scored 15 runs and hit five triples.

Biggest Surprises

1. Simi Valley

Coach Suzanne Manlet's team plays fundamental, station-to-station softball and despite a team batting average that hovered near .200 for most of the season, the Pioneers won their first Marmonte League title since 1994.

2. Alemany

They upstaged Notre Dame as the biggest surprise out of the Mission League by advancing to the Div. IV championship game. After a 4-8 start, Alemany won 11 in a row before losing to Oaks Christian in the title game.

3. Notre Dame

First-year coach Rob Dimuro led Notre Dame to its first Mission League title since 1990 after a 1-6 start to the year.

4. Paraclete

The Spirits barely made the playoffs after finishing in a tie for third place in the Olympic League with L.A. Baptist of Canoga Park. But they certainly made the most of their opportunity and advanced to the Div. V semifinals.

Biggest Disappointments

at least a share of the Marmonte League title this season and seemed to have the team to do it. But when senior pitcher Mandy Kilionski was declared academically ineligible midway through the year, Thousand Oaks lost its edge and ended up on the wrong side of countless 1-0 games. Instead of a playoff berth, Thousand Oaks finished in sixth place.

2. Westlake's first-round playoff loss

Two weeks after Westlake nearly upset Mater Dei of Santa Ana, then the No. 5 team in the country, the Warriors drew second-seeded Valencia in the first round of the playoffs. Third place in the ultra-competitive Marmonte League should've gotten them an easier draw.

3. Valencia's second-round loss

Valencia was clearly the area's most talented team but they ended the year with an early exit from the Div. I playoffs. Gone now are UCLA-bound Ashley Herrea and Jaisa Creps, as well as all-area pitcher Tori Rocco, and all-league players Natalie Mueggler and Danyale Peterson.

4. La Reina's first round loss

La Reina rolled through the Tri-Valley League to earn the No. 3 seed in the Div. V playoffs. But their first-round opponent, Western Christian of Pomona, was no easy mark. Western Christian, which advanced to the title game the previous season, upset La Reina 3-0.
