I title this year, it's only because the team's leader, Ramirez, was unflappable. Royal had just as many close games as any top team, just as many setbacks and challenges. But players such as Ramirez have a way of making problems go away. A graceful shortstop and powerful slugger, Ramirez helped Royal's run to the championship look effortless. Although she is nowhere near a prototypical leadoff batter, she filled the role perfectly, hitting .460 with a .534 on-base percentage, stealing 13 of 13 bases and scoring 39 runs in 31 games. Defensively, she had just four errors in 31 games. By the end of the year, Royal coach Bill Dishon seemed to run out of compliments for his BYU-bound standout. ``She's just special,'' Dishon said. ``We wouldn't have gotten anywhere without her.'' TIFFANY HUFF Jr., C, Saugus The line of colleges vying for Huff has grown this year, by far the finest of her career. Huff batted .460 with 31 RBI, 11 doubles, four triples and six home runs from the leadoff spot. Not many sluggers can maintain such a high average and impressive power numbers, but the left-hander did it with ease. VICTORIA KEMP So., 2B/OF, Saugus Followed an impressive freshman season with another solid year. The versatile Kemp batted .435 with 32 RBI, eight home runs, four doubles and two triples to help Saugus advance to the Southern Section Div. I semifinals. SAMANTHA MARDER Jr., C, Calabasas Marder hit .489 with a .715 slugging percentage despite having no protection behind her in the batting order. A patient hitter, Marder wasn't afraid to take a walk (14 in 18 games) but made teams pay when they pitched to her. KIM WEINSTEIN Sr., C, Chaminade One of the region's top defensive catchers, Weinstein led Chaminade to the Southern Section Div. IV semifinals. The Syracuse-bound slugger hit .341 and was named co-MVP of the Mission League. DE ANN YOUNG Sr., 1B, Camarillo Young, who will play at Oregon State next year, batted .374 with three home runs and 25 RBI to help Camarillo advance to the Southern Section Div. I quarterfinals.
