SOFTBALL BEAT RAWSON REUNION.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Sisters Nichole, Natalie and Melissa Rawson, formerly standouts at Highland of Palmdale, were reunited May 1 when Colgate swept Marist in a doubleheader.

Nichole plays for Marist. Her twin, Natalie, and Melissa play for Colgate. The twins are freshmen and Melissa is a junior.

The doubleheader turned out to be an impressive showcase for all three. In the first game, Nichole pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts but lost 1-0 on a home run in the seventh inning. In the second game, Nichole was 3 for 4 with a home run, her seventh of the season. Natalie was 2 for 3 with a home run, her 13th, and two RBI RBI

. Melissa was 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI.

``All of them were very nervous but very excited. They had the best time of their lives,'' said their mother, Cris. ``Melissa said it was really hard not to root for Nichole. Every time Nichole would strike someone out, Melissa would yell, 'Yes!' Then she would realize it was the wrong team.''

Salazar, a freshman, struck out 10, gave up four singles and drove in two runs against Washington. She's 16-4 with a 0.35 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 140 innings. The talented freshman is batting .500 with six home runs, 23 extra-base hits and a region-best 50 RBI in 81 at-bats.

The 50 RBI is believed to be the highest single-season total in region history.

First baseman Olga Hernandez, one of the team's few seniors, is batting .443. Sophomore Leilani Madrigal madrigal, name for two different forms of Italian music, one related to the poetic madrigal in the 14th cent., the other the most common form of secular vocal music in the 16th cent.  has 21 stolen bases.

San Fernando was a bit flat Monday after an eventful weekend. The Tigers won two games to take the Desert Diamond Classic tournament championship Saturday in Lancaster, and then celebrated Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo

Verdugo Hills, which defeated Garfield of L.A. 4-0 in the first round, has played a more difficult schedule than last season, when the team was 22-3 but lost in the first round. The Dons are hoping the stiffer competition has toughened them up for the postseason.

Danielle Burch struck out 12 and homered against Garfield. She's 9-4 with a 0.99 ERA, and has 98 strikeouts in 78 innings. Fellow right-hander Jessica McGivney is 7-7 with a 1.11 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 95 innings.

McGivney leads Verdugo Hills with a .416 average, and Dena DePompa is at .376.

The semifinals are at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at South Gate Park. The final is May 21 at UCLA's Easton Field.

El Camino Real right-hander Megan Zwoyer (13-8) threw a no-hitter against Narbonne. Teammate Kelly Lombard, a junior, is among the City Section's best all-around players.

COIN FLIP COSTS CANOGA

Before the City Section playoff seeding meeting last Thursday, section commissioner Barbara Feige declared Canoga Park the Sunset Six League champion based on the team's 6-1 league record, thus granting the Hunters an automatic berth in the Championship Bracket.

League rival Verdugo Hills of Tujunga also had lost just one game but was 5-1 because the Dons played one fewer game as a result of the bus-driver strike.

Verdugo Hills coach Darren FitzGerald Darren Fitzgerald (born December 16, 1977 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a Northern Irish football player who plays as a forward. He currently plays for Ballymena United in the Irish League. Honours

Even though Feige had made her decision, Canoga Park coach Dee Dow agreed to a coin flip to determine the league champion. Dow lost the flip.

The result: Verdugo was league champ and ended up the fifth seed; Canoga Park fell out of the bracket into the Invitational.

Birmingham of Van Nuys sneaked into the No. 16 slot and lost to top-ranked San Pedro in the first round.
