Young's father, Larry, said he never played sports and he can't explain why his children are so athletic.

``When I was in high school, I was left off and left out,'' he said. ``All I've tried to do was teach my kids to stay on an even keel because there will always be highs and lows. I've always thought that De Ann had a lot of innate ability and now it's starting to come out.''

TOURNAMENTS ON TAP

The 24-team Thousand Oaks tournament at Los Cerritos Middle School and the 16-team Desert Diamond Classic at Lancaster City Park both start Saturday and conclude May 4.

At the Thousand Oaks tournament, Rio Mesa of Oxnard looks to defend its title after defeating Westlake in last year's final. GAME OF THE WEEK

--HART (15-8, 3-2) at VALENCIA (18-4-2, 4-1), 3:30 p.m. today: Hart of Newhall owns Valencia in football - the Indians are 7-0 against the Vikings, including two section championships in the past three seasons - but not in softball. Valencia has beaten Hart in softball three consecutive times over the past two seasons, including a 3-1 victory April 9. Hart has shaken up its lineup since that loss and the Indians are hoping to have the right combination when they face hard-throwing right-hander Tori Rocco today.

WESTLAKE'S REHM STILL ON MARK

Michelle Rehm, the diminutive but dominating pitcher for Westlake, is having another solid season after jumping to prominence as a freshman last year. She's 9-5 with a 1.03 ERA, including three Daily News tournament victories earlier this month.

Opposing hitters can't figure out how the slender, 5-foot-4 Rehm keeps striking them out.

``I don't have a lot of speed on my pitches and I know that,'' Rehm said. ``I'm more about having movement instead of throwing fast. I think other teams don't expect much when they see me, but ... ''

Coach Gary Fetman calls Rehm ``fearless.''

Catcher Megan Shie believes Rehm's determination is a bigger weapon than a blazing fastball ever could be.

``I think Michelle succeeds because she has the desire to be perfect,'' Shie said. ``I've known her a long time and that's the way she's always been.''

MONTENEGRO BACK FOR BIRMINGHAM

Valerie Montenegro, suspended for five games after punching Birmingham of Van Nuys teammate Melissa Santana two weeks ago, rejoined the team Wednesday.

``She changed her attitude and took care of business,'' coach Jim Rose Jim Rose may refer to a number of persons:

BIG DAY, BIG DATE

Amanda Kilionski of Thousand Oaks had a big day Saturday. She hit a home run against Highland of Palmdale and was invited to the prom.

``The guy came, presented her a rose, and asked her right after the game,'' coach Gary Walin said. ``The other girls were cheering louder for that than for anything all day.''

LEAGUE UPDATES

PACIFIC VIEW

Part of the reason for Camarillo's turnaround this season is togetherness - and some great team meals, according to CF Krystle Chamberlain. ``We have a special bond. We hang out and sleep over at each others' house and have team dinners,'' she said. ``Michelle Calderon's mom made the best enchiladas.  Lauren Nydam of Village Christian of Sun Valley threw a no-hitter against Marshall of Pasadena on Tuesday, her second of the season and sixth in two years. This season, she's 14-3 with a 0.37 ERA and 150 strikeouts in 114 innings, an average of 9.2 per seven innings. She's 30-7 with 16 shutouts lifetime.

CONDOR

Oaks Christian of Westlake Village plays six games this week, but the Lions might have to persevere without ace RHP Ashlee Freeman, who has a sore arm. ``She's a little tender. It's day to day right now,'' coach Peter Ackermann said.

HERITAGE

Three of Faith Baptist of Canoga Park's key starters, RHP/2B Devina Quintero, C Alexis Garcia and 2B Amy Rudolph, are taking the SAT in Reseda at 8 a.m. on May 4. That's the same day the Contenders are participating in the conclusion of the Desert Diamond Classic in Lancaster. But if the team wins its first two games this Saturday, it will qualify for the May 4 semifinals, which don't start until 2 p.m.; that way, the girls can make it on time and not miss any games.

``It's kind of bad timing, but if we win Saturday, we'll just barely make it,'' Quintero said. ``Hopefully, we'll get into the semifinals. It's good motivation.''

MISSION

Newbury Park's 10-13 record is misleading considering six of those losses have been 1-0. Then again, five of its victories have been 1-0. The Panthers entered the week with just 16 earned runs allowed.

``We just don't have any offense,'' assistant coach Bob Zappia said. ...

Alemany of Mission Hills OF/2B Kaitlin Reiss, who has accepted a scholarship to Wisconsin, plans to play in a women's open league during the summer instead of ASA Asa (ā`sə), in the Bible, king of Judah, son and successor of Abijah. He was a good king, zealous in his extirpation of idols. When Baasha of Israel took Ramah (a few miles N of Jerusalem), Asa bought the help of Benhadad of Damascus and  travel ball. ``All the players are all from major-college (softball) and that should get me ready for Wisconsin,'' Reiss said. ``The pitcher is 43 feet away, just like college.''

for the Badgers. ``She's been away for three years, so I miss her a lot,'' Reiss said. ``It was a lot of fun playing with her when I was a freshman and she was a senior. I can't wait to get there.''

WEST VALLEY

Brandi King of Cleveland of Reseda got off to a slow start but has been on a hot streak. She has hit a triple in three consecutive games against Granada Hills, Birmingham of Van Nuys and Chatsworth over the past week, and her batting average is close to 400. It's no surprise that King, a junior, is emerging as one of the best City Section hitters in the region once again: She has a batting cage in her backyard. ``The batting cage helps quite a bit,'' King said. ``I also go to private hitting lessons with Tommy Sotelo. He's cousins with Christi, who pitches for Alemany.''
