SOFTBALL BEAT KILIONSKI HAS T.O. ON THE CLIMB.

Meantime, Kilionski attended every game to root for her teammates, pitched batting practice and counted the days.

on March 30. Nervous, she hit the first batter. But then the junior right-hander struck out the next nine and eventually came within an out of a no-hitter. She settled for a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts - and she added a home run - as Thousand Oaks won 6-0.

Kilionski wasn't through. She pitched every inning and had four more victories to carry the Lancers to the tournament championship, earning MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. She pitched five more scoreless innings - extending her scoreless streak to 40 - in the first game of a doubleheader against Camarillo before giving up a run in the first inning of the second game.

Kilionski is 6-1 with a 0.16 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 45 innings - opponents are batting 0.94 against her - and her presence means the rebuilding Lancers are suddenly a favorite to repeat as Division II champions.

``The year actually seemed to go by pretty quick,'' Kilionski said. ``But it did feel really, really good to finally get back out there. It was definitely worth it.''

Naturally, coach Gary Walin is thrilled Kilionski is finally eligible.

``She's been a good teammate from the beginning and the other girls were very excited that she finally got to play,'' Walin said. ``At practice, Mandi would stay afterward and pitch extra batting practice every day. Once, after about 90 minutes of this, I had to pull her out because she wouldn't take a break. She said she just wanted to help out the team.''

BOUND TO HAPPEN

Thousand Oaks won't have to worry about freezing temperatures during Saturday's doubleheader against Highland of Palmdale because the games are at Thousand Oaks.

``When we played them last year, we went up there to the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

and the temperature was in the low 30s. I think it snowed the night before,'' Thousand Oaks coach Gary Walin said. ``We dented three bats because it was so cold. We should have known better because the bats have a warning sign on them that says don't use them if it's less than 54 degrees. But Louisville Slugger was very gracious about it because we've been good customers for a long time. They replaced the bats for free.''

Meanwhile, Gonzales' teammates made 36 errors through the first 13 games, as the Spirits entered the week 6-7. ``It's a whole different team from last year and we're not doing too good yet,'' Gonzales said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

CONDOR

RHP Ashlee Freeman of Oaks Christian of Westlake Village said spring break came at a perfect time because she needed to rest her shoulder. ``It's not at the point where doctors are involved, but I didn't throw at all for two weeks. I just concentrated on hitting,'' she said.

FRONTIER

Calabasas started the season with eight consecutive losses before winning two of four, both of the victories against league rival Malibu. Then the Coyotes lost twice at the Daily News tournament and again Tuesday to fall to 2-14.

``It's been kind of aggravating and it's been hard to fill some spots when people left,'' said INF INF

But I've seen some of the kids start trying more because they didn't like the way we were playing.''

Westlake's Stephanie Savre, a sophomore 1B, leads the region with five triples. How does she do it? ``I'm not that fast. Some of them should have been home runs,'' she said with a smile.
