SOUTHERN SECTION QUARTERFINALS

All games today, 3:15 p.m.

DIVISION I

--ETIWANDA (21-6) at VALENCIA (25-4-2):

If top-seeded Valencia is to qualify for the semifinals for the first time in school history, the Vikings need another strong pitching performance from sophomore LH Christina Ross. That seems probable. Ross (15-2) came within one out of a no-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Hoover of Glendale in the first round. She has an impressive repertoire of pitches, including a sneaky fastball, a hard-breaking curve that handcuffs hand·cuff

right-handers and a straight change that is perhaps her best pitch.

Valencia has limited punch in its lineup, although SS Ashley Herrera (.375, six HRs) and C Jaisa Creps (.395, two HRs) are among the region's best all-around players. Creps was 2 for 3 with a HR in Tuesday's 7-3 victory at Schurr of Montebello.

--DIAMOND BAR (18-11) at CAMARILLO (25-5):

Few remaining teams possess Camarillo's blend of hitting, pitching, fielding and speed. If the Scorpions continue to excel in all facets, as they have during playoff victories over Arroyo Grande and Esperanza of Anaheim, they'll be tough to beat.

Davis (19-4), a hard-throwing junior, has a wide assortment of pitches, including an impressive riseball, an effective curve and a nasty changeup.

Royal, meanwhile, has seen plenty of solid pitchers during Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Royal RHPs Jordan McPherson and Kirstie Kenton both are dominant. McPherson (10-1, 0.09 ERA), who pitched a three-hit shutout against Rio Mesa, has allowed one earned run in 75 innings. Kenton (10-2, 0.37 ERA) figures to oppose Davis.

Royal freshman leadoff hitter Heather Erickson (.433, two HRs, 26 runs) is among four starters batting .321 or better. Devon Hofland, who had an RBI single against Rio Mesa, is hitting .330 with 16 RBI and four triples.

Royal, for years an afterthought in the talent-rich Simi-Conejo area, never has reached the semifinals. California of Whittier is the defending finalist.

California has yet to allow a run in the playoffs. The Condors scored twice in the seventh inning to eliminate Westlake 2-0 Tuesday. Davis, 1B Christine Wann and 3B Kellie Kruse are among the top hitters.

DIVISION IV

--LOMPOC (17-10-2) vs. OAK PARK (18-10) at Valley View Park in Oak Park:

Things are going Oak Park's way. After knocking off top-seeded El Segundo El Segundo (ĕl sēgŭn`dō), industrial city (1990 pop. 15,223), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1917. Its products include navigation and computer systems, aircraft parts, office machines, telephone apparatus, and  on Tuesday, the Eagles were awarded their third consecutive home game by winning a coin flip. Another chance to play at home is significant because Lompoc is three hours away.

RHP Melissa Johnson has keyed Oak Park's playoff run. The 6-foot senior snapped El Segundo's winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

We were very happy and excited to win. I think this is exactly what our team needed. Now I think we have the confidence to go all the way.''

Lompoc defeated Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  19-2 Tuesday after opening with a 3-0 victory over Chaminade of West Hills. Both homered against Santa Paula.

--NORTHWOOD (19-5) at LA CANADA (19-4-1):

Ill RHP Kelly Kalish, who missed more than a week of school and La Canada's opening playoff victory because of a virus affecting her joints, returned just in time. She pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven Tuesday to defeat Rosemead 4-1 in the second round.

``I still had a fever, but I tried not to think about it,'' said Kalish (17-1, 0.26 ERA). ``The day before, I threw for about 15 minutes. It had been about 10 days since I pitched and my elbow and wrist were hurting.''

After giving up a home run in the first inning Tuesday, Kalish settled down.

``I guess I recovered faster than I expected,'' she said. ``I really wanted to get out there because we've worked so hard all year to get to this point.''

Kalish, who added a double Tuesday, is also one of La Canada's best hitters with a .324 average. Ciri Bryan is batting .412, Courtney Turner is hitting .373 and Danielle Mellin is at .304.

Northwood of Irvine upset No. 2 seed Rosary of Fullerton 2-0 Tuesday. Amanda Garza hit a home run and Amanda Lewis (18-5) pitched a five-hitter. The Timberwolves, who finished second in the Serra League, have given up a total of one run in two playoff games.

DIVISION V

She'll have one day rest for today.

La Salle of Pasadena defeated Oxford Academy of Rowland Heights 3-1 Tuesday. Sophomore Kathleen Salvo (18-2) limited Oxford to six hits. Emily Paniagua hit a triple and a double.

DIVISION VI

--BLOOMINGTON CHRISTIAN (19-5-1) at OAKS CHRISTIAN (27-4):

Third-year school Oaks Christian of Westlake Village, the Division VI runner-up a year ago, has everyone back and should cruise. The top-seeded Lions have yet to give up a run in the playoffs behind overpowering RHPs Sara Radabaugh (13-1, 0.00 ERA) and Ashlee Freeman (10-1, 0.10 ERA). They combined on a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts in a 6-0 victory Tuesday over Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba

Bloomington Christian has outscored two playoffs opponents 27-1, including a 5-0 victory Tuesday over Victor Valley Christian of Victorville. However, Oaks Christian is a class above.
