SOFTBALL BEAT CARRY ON.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Melissa Johnson, whose pitching and hitting have carried surprising Oak Park into the Southern Section Division IV final Saturday, loves being the underdog.

``We've beaten all these ranked teams (including top-seeded El Segundo El Segundo (ĕl sēgŭn`dō), industrial city (1990 pop. 15,223), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1917.  what to expect,'' Johnson said. ``I think that helps us and gives us the advantage. All along, we've felt like we have nothing to lose.''

Now that the Eagles (20-10) have made it to the championship game against third-seed Orange Lutheran (26-6) at 4 p.m. Saturday at Barber Park in Irvine, Johnson has developed a more competitive attitude.

``We know we have a chance to actually win the whole thing. It's not just a matter of us being happy to be there,'' Johnson said. ``We want to win very bad. Everyone is so excited.''

Johnson, a right-hander, held Western of Anaheim to four singles in a 1-0 semifinal victory Tuesday. The 6-foot right-hander is 18-5 with a 0.78 ERA, and she's batting .475 with two home runs and 22 RBI RBI

She had just two strikeouts against Western but said she was confident in her defense, particularly infielders Michelle Bregar and Jannel Buckley.

``Western got the tying run on base in the seventh inning, and by that time I was getting tired,'' Johnson said. ``So I just tried to throw strikes because our infield and our outfield is so solid.''

SOUTHERN SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS

BIG GAME FOR SMALL SCHOOLS

Will good pitching beat good hitting? That question could be answered when local small-school powers Oaks Christian of Westlake Village and Faith Baptist of Canoga Park meet in the Division VI final at 10 a.m. Saturday at Barber Park in Irvine.

Actually, Oaks Christian pitchers Sara Radabaugh and Ashlee Freeman have been better than good: They've combined on no-hitters in each of the past two playoff games Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

Together they have 349 strikeouts and nine no-hitters in 178 innings. Opponents are batting a .062 against them (35 for 556).

Top-seeded Oaks Christian (29-4) has 26 shutouts this season, including six in a row (four in the playoffs). The Lions, a third-year program with no seniors, returns to the final after losing to Linfield of Temecula last year.

Meanwhile, Faith Baptist (26-7) has been the most productive team in the playoffs, regardless of division. The Contenders, coming off an 11-1 victory at Linfield, have outscored four playoff opponents 57-2. They've scored 11 runs or more in three consecutive games, including a 26-0 victory over Riverside Christian in the quarterfinals.

Devina Quintero, who is batting .549 with four home runs, 44 RBI and 47 runs, is among several standout hitters. Alexis Garcia is Garcia I might refer to:

hitting .470 with six home runs, 55 RBI and 17 doubles. Ivette Hernandez is at .448 with four home runs, 42 runs and 38 RBI.

``The kids are just on fire,'' coach Dina Nashed said.

Hernandez, a senior right-hander who is headed to Utah on scholarship next season, has yet to allow an earned run earned run

Faith Baptist, which opened in 1963, is one of the region's oldest private schools. Yet this is the Contenders' first appearance in a softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. ``The girls are very excited because we're making school history,'' Nashed said.
