SOFTBALL BEAT : THE BEST BETS.

Byline: - Vincent Bonsignore

The race for the area's best player is a two-person contest between Newbury Park's Oli Keohohou and Quartz Hill's Jodie Cox.

Both are feared hitters - for average and power - who are batting leadoff to combat opponents who consistently pitch around them.

And both help their teams in other ways, Cox as a pitcher and Keohohou as a dynamic infielder.

So who's the best? We'll hold judgment for now, but here's how the numbers stack up:

Batting average batting average
n. Baseball
A measure of a batter's performance obtained by dividing the total of base hits by the number of times at bat, not including walks.

Noun 1.
: Cox .506, Keohohou .500. Doubles: Cox nine, Keohohou six. Home runs: Cox eight, Keohohou four. RBI RBI
abbr. Baseball
runs batted in

Noun 1. rbi - a run that is the result of the batter's performance; "he had more than 100 rbi last season"
run batted in
: Cox 24, Keohohou 18.

Each of their coaches claims he has the best player. Here's what they had to say:

Newbury Park coach Pete Ackermann: ``Players tend to want to work on the best part of their game, but Oli is smart, she knows what it is going to take for her to be the best, and she will work as hard as she can until she is the best.''

Quartz Hill coach Coy Ray: ``To me, Jodie is the best because she does everything. Her batting average is higher than it's ever been, she obviously hits for power, she's a good baserunner, a good fielder, and she does her job pitching.''

More of the best

So we hedged on the area's top player - for now, anyway. As for the area's best pitcher, the honor comes down to Camarillo's Kathryn Nevard and Chaminade's Maureen LeCocq.

LeCocq, a senior, has dominated. A good example was Saturday, when she bettered Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  and Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:
  • Mater Dei Catholic College, Wagga Wagga
  • Mater Dei College, Western Australia
in two 1-0 shutouts to lead the Eagles to the Thousand Oaks tournament championship.

Nevard, however, makes a strong case. After splitting time with Cindy Ball as a freshman and a sophomore, she's developed into the best pitcher in Ventura County this year as a junior.

Camarillo coach Miki Mangan projects Nevard as a future Pac-10 standout. If so, Nevard will have many matchups against LeCocq, who is headed to Stanford next year.

``Kathryn is extremely confident, and even when she makes a mistake, it doesn't hurt her,'' Mangan said. ``Some pitchers have a tendency to show their emotions when something bad happens, but Kathryn doesn't do that. She throws hard, she's got great fundamentals, she hits her spots and she's effective pitching up or down.''

Heading into Wednesday, LeCocq owned an edge in nearly every statistical category against Nevard:

Record: LeCocq 17-2, Nevard 13-6. ERA: LeCocq 0.22, Nevard 0.48. Earned runs earned run
n. Baseball
A run scored without the aid of an error, used in computing earned run averages.

Noun 1. earned run - a run that was not scored as the result of an error by the other team
: LeCocq four, Nevard nine. Strikeouts: LeCocq 104, Nevard 147.
